Daryl Hall said that Eddie Van Halen once asked him about replacing David Lee Roth in Van Halen.
"Yeah... actually yes," the Hall & Oates frontman said with a big laugh when asked about the rumor during an interview on Q104.3. "I knew those guys really well and we actually shared some people - crew and things like that. Eddie came to a show with [his then-wife] Valerie [Bertinelli], and David had just left the band. Eddie said, 'do you wanna join Van Halen, man?' He was half-joking, but I think he was serious, I really do believe he was serious. And I took it seriously, I said, 'ehh I think not, I think I got my own shit going on.'"
Sammy Hagar instead became Van Halen's second lead singer, releasing four chart-topping albums with the group between 1986 and 1995. Before connecting with the "I Can't Drive 55" star, Van Halen reportedly also approached Journey singer Steve Perry and Scandal's Patty Smyth about working together, and considered recording an album with a variety of lead singers, including Joe Cocker.
Hall also confirmed that Eddie credited the keyboard riff from Hall & Oates' No. 1 single "Kiss on My List" with inspiring his band's biggest hit. "That's what he always told me, he said that inspired 'Jump'."
On April 1, Hall will release BeforeAfter, a two-disc collection of his solo work. He'll launch a two-week tour the same day, with Todd Rundgren serving as the opening act.
The word on the street for decades was Patti Smyth of Scandal was asked to fill in for David. She declined stating she was an east coast gal and didn’t think she could adapt to the VH lifestyle.
Fripp awesome..
Hall is more of a light rock/pop singer who wouldn’t cut it.
Sammy Hagar was a better choice.
LMAO sure they did
I saw him touring behind his Utopia album around 1975. Great show!
I never got over that. lol
he’d still be better than Gary Cirrone!
I second that re: Daryl’s house…some of those songs he sounded better than ever, what a great distinct voice!
Eddie’s Dead.
Todd is one of the most talented horrible jerks ever. Love his music as long as it's not any of his Utopia crap.
The weird thing is that Michael McDonald cowrote a Van Halen hit.
What Celo Green did with I Can’t Go For That, and Sara Smile, put Hall and John Oates to shame. Wow did Celo nail those songs.
If Van H. is thinking of working as a legacy type act, they need somebody younger than Daryl Hall unless it’s a one time event. From what I have always heard, touring wears you down, and that’s fully believable.
Daryl is a great performer, but his voice and style are a distinct brand, even today. Todd is a creative and technical genius, but he now appears somewhat out of tune and crotchety with his wispy, four hue colored hair.
Todd’s early recordings will always seem ‘sacred’ to me, as they are well done pieces of music. Meanwhile, he has become RABIDLY Liberal, ready to preach the dogma at the drop of a hat.
I know he’s dead but I could have swore TR was as well.............
Todd explored the edges at all times. His Something Anything double album was so hard to top. That kind of success early on is hard to deal with. Name me one dog of a song on that double album.
Yes for sure. I also enjoy the songs with Rundgren, another distinct voice from a better time.
Todd did a great job producing XTC’s Skylarking.
Todd made an anti Trump video called “Man in the Tin Foil Hat” that was really a third rail. He put his foot right on it. Good art though.
