Yesterday, a European intel official estimated 7,000 to 9,000 Russian KIA as of a few days earlier:

***************

Michael Weiss @michaeldweiss I spoke this afternoon to a senior European intelligence official. The picture shared about what’s happening in Ukraine differs from U.S. government assessments, especially on Russian losses. So let me present (without commentary) what this source said:3:12 PM · Mar 9, 2022·Twitter Web App

Michael Weiss @michaeldweiss “From our estimate, the KIA figure on the Russian side was anywhere from 7,000 to 9,000 a few days ago.”3:12 PM · Mar 9, 2022·Twitter Web App

The Russian government is starting to release names of individual KIAs in the cities they came from, along with posthumous medals but trying not to let the people get a sense of the total number of young Russian men Putin has gotten killed in his grandiose adventure

I’m seeing a lot of older Russian men among the dead, too. It would appear that Putin called up some reservists for this adventure in addition to the kids.

Not sure about the accuracy of those numbers. However the Russians have also lost not only their men and equipment but their reputation as well. The world now knows that their conventional forces are not the juggernaut that was once so feared and respected. Europe will be perceiving and treating Russia much differently and far less deferentially after this war is over.

I saw a new US estimate of 5000-6000 dead.

So KIA going up significantly.

With wounded 3 times that KIA number.

At the beginning of this war, I felt Russia would eventually conquer the whole country but a Ukrainian insurgency could go on for years and drive the Russians out.

Now, I’m thinking they can’t conquer the whole country. If the fight in the eastern half of the country has been tough, just wait until they try to take western Ukraine.

Not taking the whole country means an insurgency is even more potent. Western Ukraine can continue to receive arms over the border from NATO, provide a safe haven, hospital care, etc.

I really think Little Pukin is F*ed. Russia will eventually lose this war.

IMHO this is a made-for-Twitter war. Most of what we are see is either old imagery being pawned off as new/recent or computer generated, wag the dog style stuff being packaged to bring a tear to the eyes of the ignorant masses.

Russia has been somewhat successful in southeastern Ukraine. This is because the Russian Navy which controls the Black Sea has been able to land troops and supplies without much harassment. If somehow the Ukrainians obtained sophisticated stealthy drones armed with anti ship missiles, the Russian presence there would be far less tenable.

Yup. I was in Lviv a few years ago. They would have eaten Putin's soldiers alive even then if they could.

The Russians apparently acknowledged hitting the maternity hospital yesterday. That suggests to me that they may be looking for a face saving reason to call a halt.

Yeah, it's been happening since about Day 1 of the fighting. Unfortunately, it takes folks a while to catch on: there was a thread here about some Ukrainian model reportedly heading for the front lines to help fight off the Ruskis. I think the original poster was more than a little disappointed to learn the supposed 'warrior babe' was just posing for a photo shoot with a fancy BB gun - kind of 'popped his bubble'!

Here is my theory on the MIG fiasco. I'd love to hear reactions.

I think Putin is bluffing when he declares that a country giving Ukraine jets will be an escalation.

I think Putin doesn't want us to know that his air force is in the same disarray as the rest of his military.

I think the "tell" is that Putin is going from "aircraft to Ukraine" straight to the threat of a nuclear response. What happened to Putin saying his planes will shoot down the Ukraine aircraft and bombard their airstrips? What happened to Putin saying he'd bring in his strategic bombers to devastate the Ukrainian countryside?

Why is Putin jumping over an air-to-air response and straight to nukes, if not to cover for an air force in disrepair?

Not if you are looking at information from sources closer to the battle. There is a lot of video and images available from combatants and witnesses on both the Ukrainian and Russian side, although there is more footage from Ukrainians because their civilians are gathering footage.

You can use google translate to get a rough idea of what the captions and text says in the posts on twitter and telegram.

Those “javelin cages” the Russians have put on top of their tanks is worthless.

What idiot came up with that idea?

Might have been a 'feel good thing' for the tank crews - make 'em a little more confident as they headed into Ukraine (it would take awhile for the tankers to figure out the countermeasures didn't work). You know, kind of like an American battalion chanting "Diversity Is Our Strength!", before going into combat...
