First, and most importantly, virtually no one in the US has got this right, including conservative outlets and pundits. Putin's a thug, but he's an excellent politician and a strong leader. And he’s not crazy, as some seem to surmise. He is a cold, calculating, strategic thinker who has disciplined his mind and body for decades. He’s a Russia first guy. Think Donald Trump minus all that hot air, Big Macs, and add a willingness to off his enemies.
We promised Russia we would not expand NATO when the Soviet Union fell. We went back on that promise and incorporated almost the entire Eastern Bloc into NATO.
Then after 9/11, Bush II unilaterally cancelled the '72 ABM treaty, which until then had frozen nuclear weapon development in the Soviet Union and the US, effectively ending the arms race. Bush's rationale was that we needed to develop new nuclear weapon tech to defeat terrorism. Like we were going to nuke Osama Bin Laden.
Bush's rationale for NATO expansion was also terrorism. So, Bush triggered a fresh arms race. Bush was a decent man, but the more time goes by, the more he looks like an absolute moron to me.
Ukraine belonged to Russia for centuries. They have almost identical cultures and languages. Kiev used to be the capital of Russia. Putin's war is a war of defense. Russia (rightly, in my view) feels threatened by NATO expansion. Russia is a mainly land-based, continental power which desires a buffer with the West. Ukraine serves that purpose perfectly.
The US triggered a coup d'état in Ukraine in 2014, overthrowing the democratically elected president who was Russia friendly, and installing a pro-western, pro-NATO leader. Putin has had his eye on Ukraine ever since but dared not do anything when Trump was in power

There is definitely a fifth column on the right that fuels Putin and our other enemies. He saw a weakn and dived west and decided to make his move to destroy Ukraine. Now our allies, too, like Poland see U. S. weakness and demand additional guarantees on weapons transfers to Ukraine.
The fact is the CCP has more of a legitimate claim to Taiwan than Muscovy does to Kyiv. The CCP sees now they can “accidentally” sink a carrier and a weak U.S. won’t do a thing about it. Weakness breeds aggression. We pay for that in American blood and economically with a lower standard of living.
I read and re-read then read again the first paragraph. I stand by my statement. truitt hates President Trump
No we just don’t think a free people should be over run by communists
Plus your calling names doesn’t strengthen your argument
Let me rephrase that for you:
After the implosion of the Warsaw Pact and the Soviet Union, some Western politicians made a totally unnecessary concession by making a non-binding verbal promise - functionally equivalent to a flippant, off-the-cuff remark - to not expand NATO.
Why should anyone in the West have knelt down beside the still-twitching body of the moribund Soviet Union and made any such unnecessary "promise," I ask you?

You lack reading retention
The first paragraph puts President Trump in a great position, great leader, patriot, genius, yeah he eats Big Macs and bloviates, but we all know that is correct.
The author clearly doesn't "hate" President Trump.
You are too sensitive.

Good morning to everyone except the POS Republican and Democrat politicians who are about to fork over $14 billion to Ukraine without blinking an eye.
The same people who wouldn’t give Trump one red cent for the southern border wall to protect our own country.

Again and finally it’s time, and past for those who know to speak up......HEck Turkey and India stations give a fairer view of this war then US or EU does...
I agree with you about the name calling. I can do better in that regard. Keep it to my points. I guess I have been frustrated by all the people calling me a Putinista, which is a baseless claim.
I simply want to concentrate on our collapsing country, not on two corrupt kleptocracies.
Excellent summarization, Greetings_Puny_Humans!
Seriously: Why are so many FReepers coming out of the woodwork, in defense of Russia? Saying not only that we shouldn't "get involved" (a position I could respect), but also claiming that Russia has a legitimate gripe?
I am astonished and not a little puzzled by this!
Regards,
Because some here don’t believe we should be involved in a war in the Ukraine, ask questions to what should be the US involvement, how we got to this point, and having a person (party) in the the WH that lies with its media cheerleaders (many of whom opposed Reagan taking on the USSR as unstable, shouldn’t be near the nuclear button blah blah blah) and now is the big anti-Russia, strong US defense party who talks about how their environmentalism can be advanced during this war ... does not make those FReepers Putin lovers, sympathizers, apologists, useful idiots, etc. Oh there are some of those around here, mostly because they hate Xiden and what the demonkraps have done and are doing to this country, and are too emotionaly wound up to either prefer Putin over Xiden, or write like they are.
I have read all your comments here (up to the point that I am typing this). So in your opinion, with Xiden in the WH, what do you propose that the US do with the situation in the Ukraine?
One cannot compare President Trump to putin. The author does call putin a thug, I’ll give the author that BUT there can be no similarities and is no similarity of putin with President Trump. truitt is a thug for suggesting such
“Bush was a decent man,...”
Author lost a reader or two (million) right there
Our fake president is up to his black eyeballs in Ukrainian corruption. One of our imports from Ukraine attempted to deliver the goods for impeachment of President Trump. Putin is a known…. History tells, do not poke the bear unprepared..
Mac, at this point, with the whole Jewish organizations in Ukraine condemning Russia, with a Jewish President, with Jews on the front lines fighting Russia, no one takes this BS from you people seriously.
Yes, there are bad people in Ukraine. Just like there are Nazis here in the USA, which I suspect includes a large number of Putinists on this forum who parrot the Pro-Russian propaganda that is not just spread by Russian trolls, but by Nazi websites like The Daily Stormer, Stormfront, etc.
Maybe you should turn your energy to dealing with the documented Nazi ideology of the Russian ‘separatist’ leaders, who have even taken photographs of themselves with Swastikas, and who have written and managed Nazi magazines.
That also bugged me. Like, wow, dude, YOU should be president, huh? I’ll bet you would be the best gosh-darned president that ever was!
