MIAMI — A man and his 11-year-old grandson found a little more than they were looking for during a weekend fishing trip. The pair pulled two .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifles out of a canal near Miami.
Duane Smith told the Miami Herald he saw a YouTube video on magnet fishing and decided to give it a try on Sunday. They dropped a 5-pound magnet in the C-102 canal in southern Miami-Dade County.

“They are not against the law here in Texas.”

“Florida has no laws regulating 50 caliber rifles......They’re legal to own.”
Federal crime.
If I understand things correctly, it's not the caliber that would get you in trouble - it's the fact that the serial numbers have been removed...
are 50 cal barretts even available to the general public??? Is there more to this story?
“If it was the canal near 75 ave sw, one of those is mine.”
Keep you mouth shut. You are guilty of violating a federal crime.
Correct

E-Bay and Amazon are your friends
They just didn't count on somebody finding them.
Don't be surprised if nobody ever figures out anything about those firearms.
+1
Will they buff out?
I guess anything that can hold onto a Barret .50 cal and not let go. Have to be a strong son of a gun.
wiped away most of the corrosion in 30 minutes.
***If it were me, I’da kept my mouth shut.
I don’t think that’s what those people will be coming for now. I’d be watching my six.
Who said the rifles were involved in “interstate or foreign commerce”? Even the authorities admitted they’ll have difficulty assessing the origins of these firearms.
The rifles will likely end up in some police officer’s private collection.
It would make sense at this point to pass a law saying it is illegal to breathe.
“If it were me, I’da kept my mouth shut.”
A lot of good that would do. In fact, might land you in a ;it of trouble.
My bet is a felon or other person knew it was illegal to possess them and were afraid they were going be stopped by the coast guard or a state equivalent. Thus, he had them prepared to toss overboard if necessary.
