I'll toss out three basic perspectives:
1) New music is great and those who disagree either don't know where to find it or have a generational bias
2) New music sucks but there's reason to believe it will recover and be great again
3) New music sucks and it's all downhill from here
I probably agree most with 2 but am nagged by the possibility of 3.
Younger? No thanks!
I really like Lord Huron, Manchester Orchestra, and Weezer still cracks me up.
I'll be humming Pink Triangle the entire time Maura Healey's gubenatorial campaign is happening, which I hope implodes as soon as I post this reply.
Music, like fundamental science, has stagnated over the past 40-years due to a major reduction in the averages of both I.Q. and imagination in the highly educated human population.
I just listened to 5-6 new bands people here have listed.
I do not get what is so great about them. No catchy memorable tunes.
I cannot remember a single one.
Back on the 70’s the first time you heard Melissa or Green Grass and High Tides, or Your Song by Elton John or a Pschechelic Furs or Heaven by The Cure, they a distinct sound that immediately attracted you to them and you knew they would be a hit
All these new groups sound alike.
They are also among the most Satanic creatures in pop culture today.
No one in his right mind will listen to any of these Satanic losers.
The correct answer for the moment is it sucks and MAY never come back. Every 3rd person thinks they will be a “musician” or “recording artist”— and the “industry” perpetuates this notion as they always have (parasitic in nature).
Here’s an example of 11 plus years ago— a song and artist that is infuriating- the track sounds like a cartoon soundtrack and at the same time the chorus and ending is a long annoying whiny weenie screed about a failed love affair.
Plan on suffering for their “art” (as they apparently, did):
Gotye- Somebody That I Used to Know

As an antidote here’s the Eagles “Get Over It”— because the real underlying whine is “millenial” as in you need to pay for me, because...I’m me!
“Like to Find your little child and kick it’s little a@@!”
Get Over It— Predate Gotye by more than 10 years— they knew, The Eagles.

There’s way too much choice these days and music has become a commodity instead of a highly prized possession like it was way back when. There might be some great new music coming out every day and it’s the equivalent of a tree falling in the woods.
That coupled with the fact that there’s a crap-ton of bad music coming out every day.
My son wanted me to listen to one of his favorite songs today. It sounddd like two dogs fighting.
Rd later.
What new music?
Woke music sucks.
I have given up on woke TV shows and movies, too.
Lots of decent older movies I haven’t seen yet.
And you can find most of them for free.
Bull, it’s easy to hear anything. Radio, Spotify, etc.
70% are older folks, the largest, richer market. Screw 18-49. Oldies sell more. All the teens at my restaurant know them all.
Old music/songs are being copied by new artists at a great rate. Seems the takeover by cRAP and techno computer generated stuff along with singers using autotune and other enhancers. The music industry is whistling past the graveyard. Just like photos and video can be manipulated for a desired result, the music industry is dying the same death as far as originality.
Google: why is music today so bad
Many links with a lot of opinions.
The sameness, lack of musicianship.
Strippers dancing in the background and the “singer” lipsyncing.
There is great new music but its far and few between and generally not supported by the big American labels.
One of the saddest things to come out of the new music is the shift from Frank Sinatra to Rap.
Will we ever recover?
I think there is no new “music”. A lot of noise for sure, but it’s not music.
Last night when I was sewing I put in my flash drive of ‘70s music — including some disco — that took me to my happy place of fun times. Lots of Motown, BeeGees, ABBA.
There is great new music. But it’s not the stuff the major labels are pushing. The bigs have all gotten addicted to the formula. Which is worn out and boring, and now make nothing but disposable music. They no longer take risks, they no longer groom and grow and artist. It’s now “you’re marketable, get in the studio, let our producer do his thing, cash the check and shutup”.
I consider anything after 1900 to be “New Music”. So yeah.
