As The Tonight Show’s pioneering host, Johnny Carson left behind a huge fortune and a fabulous clifftop mansion when he died in 2005. And when the home went up for sale again in 2017, it came with an asking price of $81.5 million.
What kind of custom features does the architectural dream that once belonged to Carson have? Plus, when did he buy it, how much did he pay for it, and was anyone willing and able to put down more than $80 million to live in it more than ten years after his death?

Only a four car garage?! Jay Leno’s garage isn’t even a good start a good start.
Namath is a lucky guy because Johnny Unitas was injured for Super Bowl III. But that’s the nature of football.
A former in-law of mine went to Catholic U. in Washington DC (late '70s-early '80s) They had a homecoming football game in which Alumni Ed McMahon was the guest of honor. My former in-law and his buddies were hammered and sitting behind Ed and his entourage in the stands. When Catholic U. scored, one of the buddies jumped up to cheer, got sick and threw up on Ed's back. True story.
Having actually watched the walk thru video, I doubt that is going to happen...........
All I have to say is wow!
On the other hand, it sits precariously close to the cliff that is slowly eroding away. Not a good selling point.
In my area they're using the "dyno-mite" guy. I'd rather watch Nameth.
Just sayin'
I get a kick out of watching Rodney Dangerfield as a guest on the tonight show Johnny set him up beautifully
“...After his death at the age of 79 in 2005, his estate sold the home for $46 million. And in 2017, it reemerged on the market, listed at $81.5 million”
Unfortunately, it is in California.
“After his show he might as well already been dead because you simply did not see him anymore.”
If you’ve ever been around a heavy smoker in your family (as an example) and you’ve seen them go through the lifestyle of that disease and expire at the end of an arduous medical journey it might clarify understanding about why Johnny wasn’t in public view that much.
He was not well when he retired. But he did manage to relax somewhat and gather his thoughts a bit, which might be all anyone could really ask for at that stage in life and in poor health.
Looking at Obama, the characteristics are very similar. For a lifelong smoker 63 is really about the average age of life expectancy, with no other health conditions other than a history of smoking.
When I watched later Johnny Carson episodes I noticed his breathing and his chest movement, and his phrasing when speaking (to facilitate reduced pulmanary function).
I see the same thing with BHO.
I’d pay 80 mil for a holy cow.
If I had 80 mil.
The interior pic looks like an old school, Hawaiian luxury hotel.
I can't take my eyes off his ears. He could pick up signals from Neptune with those things!
LOL...we get the DynoMite guy, too.
How much for a cardboard box in the alleyway?
Oh, CA will pay YOU, for that lifestyle!
I noticed Johnny Carson doing bit parts on Get Smart TV series reruns. Was he down on his luck at that time or just having fun?
Close I suppose. I can’t quite put my finger on what it looks like. But imagine that’s your “home”, something you slip away to after a hard day’s work. I wouldn’t know what to do with all that luxury.
That was in 2018.
I see from many of the comments nobody actually read the very interesting article.
Johnny U. and Raymond Berry deadly combo.
It has everything I like, wood, stone, glass, light, and natural greenery.
That's nice!
