As The Tonight Show’s pioneering host, Johnny Carson left behind a huge fortune and a fabulous clifftop mansion when he died in 2005. And when the home went up for sale again in 2017, it came with an asking price of $81.5 million.
What kind of custom features does the architectural dream that once belonged to Carson have? Plus, when did he buy it, how much did he pay for it, and was anyone willing and able to put down more than $80 million to live in it more than ten years after his death?

Nice. Please tell me there's a guardrail.
Ed died a pauper. He outlived his money. Johnny or his heirs just let that happen?
Yeah, that caught my eye also.
Steve Alan was a funny guy. He was sharp as could be too.
No, Carson was not the Premier Tonight host.
He’ll never be eclipsed though, IMO. He took it and ran
with it and put in an amazing run.
I miss the guy to this day.
Why did it take 12 years to put a dead man’s house on the market?
First of all, how many people have that kind of money?
And second, how many people with that kind of money would want a house like that? In most cases they pretty much just want the land, and tear down the house.
I have been sick for a few weeks now. I was reading about Carson last night on Twitter. So many loved the Carson show, aka the Tonight show. Reading about it made me so nostalgic for those days, those days when California had it nice.
So like a sick person sometimes does for some reason you obsess in kind of sickmind state. I woke up at 3:30 am, and obsessed over anything Carson I could find on the net about him. I have no idea why. Bored. In the past I have read the Bushkin book, if you haven’t and you liked Carson it’s a real must.
But boy, did that guy, as they say, ‘chase tail’. I don’t know how he expected his marriages to survive through that behavior, his lifestyle in that house must have been incredible.
So I wake up to find one more tidbit to satisfy my hunger about Carson here on Fr and I thank you for putting it up. It’s quite interesting to me.
I recall a skit Allen did live. He was dressed in a safari style outfit and had been taken hostage. He was reading the lines which said at this point the captors dumped a bucket of tarantulas on him. Which they did! Seems he was deadly scared of spiders and these monsters wigged him out. He jumped up like a Polaris missile. Screamed out who is responsible for this!! I think they needed a new writer as a result. Great show.
81.5 million is just ever so slightly out of my price range.
How much for a cardboard box in the alleyway?
Me too. It was anti-climactic.
Most people ‘remember’ his last show as the one with Bette Midler. That was a Thursday show. His actual last show was the Friday episode, and it was pretty much blaaah.
Or a company headquarters or something. Please take a seat, the president will be out to meet you in a few minutes. There’s some magazines.
I did the same thing while sick recently. Binged on Carson and the Golden Girls late at night. Then Golden Girls interviews and guest appearances, including on Carson. Laughing made me feel better. Nostalgic for sure.
“Nice. Please tell me there’s a guardrail”
No kidding, they probably had security keep Ed McMahon away from the pool, that or refuse to serve him drinks.
I'm guessing Wife #4 inherited it.
You do get it :)
I just saw the price on the Carson Beach house has been dropped by about 20 million.
A funny man and a mean drunk.
“Joe Nameth said Johnny was a mean drunk”
I wish they would stop showing those annoying Medicare commercials with Nameth. He looks like death warmed over.
Here are a few more pics. I like the style, as opposed to the austere white-on-white, ultra modern usually in big shots’ houses. But the windows. I see that all over now. I’d go nuts worrying about peepers, but then I really, really value privacy.
