The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!
In Georgia, Zone 7B, we are expecting high winds, snow and sleet tonight into tomorrow. We are hunkering down. You may have heard about how Atlanta etal shuts down during winter storms. Usually, we don’t get snow, but ice, black ice. I don’t expect to go anywhere for another 36 hours. Too dangerous. I don’t need to slide my car into another one.
You’ll have no problem gardening out here. Loads of people have gardens of all sorts.
You’ll like it In Western Pa...I know I do and have for almost 20 yrs. I lived in NY state for about a year or so. Was happy to get back in Pa.

I want to remind people that do can or store that canning supplies are available NOW so don’t wait...I’ve been buying a few lids here and there for months and I have plenty....if you have access to a commissary, they’re selling 12 count lids for 2.12cents....
and if you store salt, or sugar,do NOT use oxygen absorbers...salt and sugar should last a lifetime....
Next time use a name like "2019#3Red". (Saw names like this all the time working Sch F tax returns.)
Liz, very nice!
Usually I get it from Farm & Fleet, but they do cost more than I’d like. If you know a farmer who raises wheat, rye, or oats, you might be able to buy it directly. Or, sometimes they’ll advertise on Craigslist that they’re giving away spoiled straw or hay.
I’m in the process of expanding the list of grains I grow, in part so that I can eventually grow my own straw.
Ice is the WORST. I’ll take 15” of snow over ice, any day! I won’t go anywhere when we’ve had a layer of ice. Screw it! My life and the lives of others are more important. :)
You gotta suck it up, Buttercup! Circle of Life and all that jazz. Next year we’ll be raising ‘Chuck’ Roast. ;)
With the car market being what it is these days, it behooves people to not take any unnecessary chances with damaging their vehicles.
Veggie heaven.
So, the USDA is telling us that ‘Foundation Foods’ aren’t Chinese Take-Out, Taco Bell and Pizza Hut? They must be trying to start a ‘mostly peaceful’ riot or something! ;)
Good idea for leftover roasted vegetables. Put them in a cast iron skillet and cover w/
sheet of puff pastry....et voila....Vegetable Pot Pie. Egg wash pastry for an appetizing golden crust.
I had a great deal working with a neighbor. I would trade tomatoes, peppers, onions and berries for venison. My neighbor’s wife was fed up because they had 2 freezers full of deer meat.
I currently have a freezer full of venison, but with the price of meat these days, I’m not giving any of it up!
Nice deal with your neighbor - the person who wanted to rent my garden space was a stranger, so that was an automatic “no”, plus I never seem to have enough space for what I want to plant, much less make room for someone else

Increase Tomato Plant Yield – Get Bigger Harvests
Tomato Geek - February, 2021
If there is one thing all gardeners have in common, it is the desire for big, bountiful harvests, every year. If only it were as simple as it sounds!
In this article, I will share several tips for increasing tomato plant yields. There are many different things you can do to encourage your tomatoes to be more productive. Whether you are growing in the ground or in containers, there is something here for you.
I have organized these tips to be chronological. In other words, the first tips are for the early season, and the later tips are targeted for more established plants. Let’s get started!
Start Indoors
Use Grow Lights v. weak window light
Use the right sized container
Provide proper nutrients
Prune Indeterminate plants, DO NOT prune Determinate plants
Improve airflow (don’t crowd your tomatoes!)
Harvest promptly
Protect from hot weather
Plant productive varieties (list of varieties at link)

sounds good Liz, you could also throw in some leftover sliced steak or other beef.
