A letter penned by a young Army sergeant in Germany to his mother in Woburn was lost in the mail for 76 years until finally being delivered last month.
On Dec. 6, 1945, 22-year-old Sgt. John Gonsalves wrote to his mother, sending his well wishes and hopes of returning home soon.

Are you for real?
Such as???
BTW...my uncle was shot and killed in action 2 days after crossing the Remagen bridge into Germany. 20 years old.
He was a member of the "Allies". Did he do "terrible things" in service to his country?
You attempt to sound wise...but you sound exactly the opposite.
You invoke Christian principles - without acknowledging that hard fought wars existed through Christendom and were not condemned - in fact, God ordered quite a number of them.
Quit pretending to be a historian and a moralist. You suck at both.
American GI's did not rape French women. You're full of s#*@.
There were french women who were extremely drawn to real men like the American GI's - instead of the white flag waving Frenchies who carried "almost new" weapons (only dropped once).
French men became emasculated between the time France helped us win our Independence, and WWI.
“If Americans GIs were so great ask all the French women they raped?”
You had better have something to back that allegation up with.
That is why the USPS sells Forever Stamps.
Other than that, we were basically fine.
Other than that, we were basically fine.
War is hell, isn't it.
The purpose of war is to kill people and break things - as sad as that is.
No different than God commanded his people to do in scripture.
Would you rather Hitler would have spread out through the entirety of Europe?
Would you rather Japan would have taken over the entirety of the Pacific?
The one city that was burnt to the ground in revenge instead of war-fighting was Dresden, and that wasn't by the US.
You appear to be a self-righteous butterfly and I disagree with you 100%, because they were and still remain THE GREATEST GENERATION. Period.
But by chance do you happen to have any stats, reports or first-hand accounts for “all the French women they raped”? No? Just as I thought.
Call it what you want; just don't tell me that we didn't do terrible things to win it.
(Your point about Dresden is incorrect, by the way. It was planned by the RAF and largely carried out by the British, but the Americans absolutely participated in that raid.)
You were probably against Hiroshima and Nagasaki also. Am I correct?
In any large group there is bound to be a certain number of scoundrels. I think the US tried to prevent crimes by members of the US armed forces but there must have been some cases. On the other hand, the Red Army committed a large number of rapes and murders in Eastern Europe (in the countries they were supposedly liberating from the Germans) but I doubt the Soviet authorities cared. In fact one of the incidents that turned Stalin against Tito was that he did not do anything to punish Milovan Djilas when Djilas complained about crimes committed against Yugoslav civilians by the Soviet troops.
My father fought in WWII in the Pacific and I admire that generation, but I would say that in our history there were three "greatest generations"--those who fought the War for Independence, those who fought in the Civil War, and those who fought in World War II.

Agreed. I stand corrected. Three “greatest generations” indeed.
I see how this works.
Deflect from the correction I made to your assertion that the US played no role in the fire-bombing of a city "in revenge", and obfuscate by moving the goalposts.
Assuming you concede that the United States did, in fact, participate in the destruction of a city "in revenge instead of war-fighting" (your words), I think we have your agreement that we did, in fact, do terrible things to win the war.
Common sense would say as much.
But if you've coronated an entire generation of Americans as the "greatest generation" because of their military service, then their military service is sacrosanct; they could never have done anything bad, and any evidence that some of them may have done something bad has to be swept back under the rug.
Why don't you learn real history, instead of the pablum you ingested?
I"ll even help you:
Captain Walker's History Lesson For Today
After you learn some truth, how about responding to my question:
Do you think the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings were wrong?
"The one city that was burnt to the ground in revenge instead of war-fighting was Dresden, and that wasn't by the US." (These are your words, not mine.)
I corrected a point that you had made about Dresden, which was to point out that the United States did take part in it. (I'm the one who corrected you about Dresden.)
To be fair, I do understand your predicament: You had no problem considering the bombing of Dresden a wanton act until you were faced with the fact that the United States played a large role in it. And because you won't concede the point that we did, in fact, do some terrible things during that war, you ran off to get a different perspective on the act so you could sleep content in the knowledge that "greatest generation" would never do something terrible during that war.
It was fine to consider the firebombing of Dresden a criminal act until you realized that the Americans were involved; better to reconsider the destruction of Dresden than to ever concede that some Americans in that war may have been criminals as well.
I'm done. I can argue facts but not emotions; have a good night.
What does the dove have to say about it?
My father was elated. He was in basic training in Mississippi, getting ready to do a land invasion of Japan - which would have caused massive casualties on both sides.
You need to learn some history. You have nothing to stand on.
