Do you cook chicken thighs and rice for your dog?
Today, I am, since he was acting so down, last night.
We’ve tried every top name brand of food, and, he’ll go for days without eating it :-(
I tried to dress it (the latest one we’re trying) up with some cheese, and, I think that’s what got him 😩
Re: homemade dog food.
We cook rice and add some type of protein, usually raw eggs with fish (sardines), or chicken or ground beef. They thrive on that.
We’re now dog-sitting a little pup until a family gets back in August. He was skin and bones when he got here. After a week, his ribs, while visible, are less apparent and his backbone isn’t as protruding.
My SIL got a pup about a year ago. He did so much research for the best dog food possible, and paid much more for it. The dog ate it for awhile, then started to get thinner and thinner. Finally, one day last fall, I said that the dog looked hungry and that I wouldn’t want that kibble day in and day out either. Give him some good old-fashioned table scraps along with his food. The poor dog could not even stand up for long.
So, back to the research and they started cooking for the dog. Lots of ground beef, eggs, cheese, pumpkin, broccoli, etc. Made some gravy to make the food easy to eat and yummy. So now they put together his food out of meats, some veggies, blended egg shells, eggs, etc. In other words, table scraps. They re-invented the wheel.
Tell them to get this. Wonderful stuff.

Our little guy doesn’t even like eggs!
I’m going to try the chicken and beef, with the rice, though.

Re: dog food
In 1961, my older sister brought home a puppy.
She convinced my parents to let us keep him.
She wanted to name him Phineas, but my mother said “He’s lucky to be here!”, and so he was named “Lucky”.
My dad went out and bought a 50-lb. bag of Gravy Train, which was very popular at the time.
He put some in a bowl and added the right amount of water.
Lucky sniffed at it once and walked away.
That sent my dad into orbit before John Glenn got there.
So, my mother looked at Lucky and said, “OK, so you won’t eat dog food? Well, then, you are going to eat what we eat!”
Smart dog!
He ate great, with the occasional bone from the butcher to gnaw on the marrow and a can of Alpo here and there.
He loved my mom’s cooking.
And he lived to be 19 years old.
Not bad for a Manchester Rat Terrier.
