Imagine this: Alabama loses a heartbreaker on Saturday. It makes Georgia sweat, taking a lead deep into the third quarter and nearly handing the powerhouse Bulldogs their first loss.
In postgame press conferences, both Nick Saban and Kirby Smart say the Crimson Tide prove they are one of the four best teams in the country, if not No. 2.
What does the College Football Playoff committee do? Does it buck history and invite a two-loss team for the first time? Does it pass on the big brand that is Alabama with the likely Heisman Trophy winner in quarterback Bryce Young?

The college playoffs without Alabama would be like Christmas without "Die Hard".
Heartbreak? Hardley, ROFL is more like it. Chaos is College Football’s bread and butter.
SEC just feeds off the stupid teams that have joined it. SEC was an also ran until all these stupid programs opened their arteries and started feeding the beast.
Hope the OU program rots in hell.
The college playoffs without Alabama would be like Christmas without palm trees................................
Please quit abusing the news forum.
Not only no...Hell no.....
Auburn (not even a ranked team this year), spanked them hard last Saturday in the Iron Bowl and forced 4 overtimes.....
Georgia would destroy them.....
Look at this list of “also rans.”
2020 Alabama CFP
2019 LSU CFP
2017 Alabama CFP
2015 Alabama CFP
2012 Alabama BCS
2011 Alabama BCS
2010 Auburn BCS
2009 Alabama BCS
2008 Florida BCS
2007 LSU BCS
2006 Florida BCS
What sucks is if Alabama loses, most likely Notre Dame will get in, even though they haven’t beaten anybody this year.
16 leagues, 12-16 teams each, two division of 6-8 teams in each league.
League championship games would be the first round of playoffs.
If your team can't win its league, it can't be the National Champion.
Round two would be 8 games spread out among the traditional New year bowl games. After that round eight teams are left, requiring three more games.
Independents? Not eligible for National Championship. They don't like it? Tough, join a league.
Too many games? Cut the regular season by one game.
Then we won't have to listen to Nick crying the blues when he loses.
Until there is a Championship of Champions it is only fantasy football.
This is General/Chat. Perfectly acceptable.
We will find out re GA
so you’re proposing the NFL model?
IMHO, there’s a bit more to it than just Alabama losing a close game to Georgia.
In order for Alabama to make it to the CFP with two losses, Iowa would need to beat Michigan in the Big 10 Championship and Houston would need to beat Cincinnati in the American Championship.
Haven’t seen a team so dominant on the field as Georgia in years.....
Not even a Georgia fan but have to respect what they have built there.....
but who cares. It’s an ESPN/Alabama wet dream and not much else. One sided competition is just orderly so they can sell TV revenues.
It’s everything that’s wrong with sports these days.
Yes, but strength of schedule has been very weak.
Who really cares, Georgia has it pretty much wrapped up unless they screw up.
I like the variety of the earlier competitions.
If Georgia beats Bama, the Crimson Tide should not be in the playoffs.
