Lady Gaga: She’s the Once-in-a-Generation Pop Star Who Is Also a Born Movie Star
Variety ^ | Nov 2021 | Owen Gleiberman

Posted on 11/28/2021 2:06:17 PM PST by CondoleezzaProtege

Reviewing a lavish new Hollywood musical in the Sept. 29, 1968, issue of The New Yorker, Pauline Kael wrote, “Barbra Streisand arrives on the screen, in ‘Funny Girl,’ when the movies are in desperate need of her. The timing is perfect.” I’m tempted to say the same thing about Lady Gaga. Suddenly, she’s ruling the movies like no one else this year.

... She’s earning her buzz the old-fashioned way, by giving a performance that has to be seen, in a movie that’s being talked about the way movies used to be talked about...

I’ve never claimed to be too refined, but I take “House of Gucci” seriously. It’s a fantastic movie...Gaga plays Patrizia Reggiani, the middle-class social climber who married into the Gucci fashion dynasty and did all she could to take it over, not as some operatic villainess, eyes flashing with dollar signs, but as a real-world diva who is as ruthlessly practical as she is ambitious.

There’s no doubt that Gaga is the film’s commercial spark plug. People want to see her; she’s driving the conversation in Hollywood. And who thought that a movie — not a Marvel movie but an actual movie — could drive the conversation anymore? But, of course, Lady Gaga had already done that — in “A Star Is Born,” the film that linked her, almost karmically, to Streisand, the last woman to drive a remake of “A Star Is Born” ...

Gaga, I think, has the chance to become a movie star on that rarefied level. It’s not just that she’s as good as Cher (who at her best, in “Moonstruck” and “Mask,” was a powerhouse of an actress)...It’s that she has the potential to do for movies what Streisand did: give them a human center of gravity....

I wouldn’t know her songs If I heard them nor pick her face out of a lineup.

I agree with you.

But you have to remember many folks on FR still think Sandra Dee is a “kid.” And they haven’t watched a movie since Ben Hur came out.

Know your audience. Ha ha.

Barbara Stanwyck? How old are you? She was an old woman when I was a kid. And I am old now.

Thanks. I know what she sounds like now. My forth grade teacher was obsessed with the Sound of Music, around 1969. I can still hear her banging away on that piano!

The culture is different today, there are no movie stars anymore. Actors don’t even want to be stars, they want to be “craftsmen”.

Even poppy little Anette is more skilled.

Then you get into artists like Elli Berlin, and now she’s WAY outta there!

She’s a degenerate coke head. How in the world do you screw up an Italian accent when you’re Italian?
