I've spent the last few months putting together a book on my grandfather, Jack Bell, a prospector who won and lost fortunes from Alaska down to Mexico - naturalist, angler, newspaper and magazine writer, law enforcement. Book's too big. So while I'm figuring out what to do about that, thought I'd put up the occasional story of his to see if people find them interesting. Major categories that might interest you are prospecting/naturalist, fishing, the first air mail pilots, and crime.
“They are not bad eating either.”
Burro burros?
“They are not bad eating either.”
Burro burros?
Yes... :) It was a common thing to consume Burro in the Southwest. Up until it was made illegal of course. Yet many still poached Burros for awhile after.
70th annual Burro BBQ. They still did real Burros when I was a kid.

The offer remains open should you need to do a tax deductible research expedition. Heck I might even run you and your husband up to the wild horse & burro rehabilitation center!
Who knows? ridesthemiles might even tag along...
Many thanks for the invite. Waving to ridesthemiles, too. At the time Jack lived in Verdi on Dog Valley Road, his phone number was 7.
PING to burros article by my grandfather. And a HAPPY THANKSGIVING to all of you!
Enjoyable read about burros. Now I’m wondering why they won’t eat cabbage, guess they wouldn’t enjoy a good slaw dog.
Exactly MY question! I’m wondering if he tried his train on canned cabbage, which I wouldn’t like either, or he tried his burro Baldy on fresh at home.
Thanks, mairdie -HAPPY THANKSGIVING To you too.
Hoping it’s a wonderful day for you, with wonderful food and friends, and memories of so many Thanksgiving days we’ll always be thankful for. Love, Mary
Thank you mairdie. What an excellent forebear you chose! I appreciate your sharing his stories.
All ancestors are fun! They’re puzzles for us to figure out how their traits came down to show up in us.
I love that he sees the art in nature. I don’t love that he blows up magpies to protect his burros.
This topic was posted , thanks mairdie.
How could burritos have anything to do with building the west?
Taco Bell didn’t invent them until 1948, and by then, the west was already built. Mostly.
