Mine was born in 1865 at the end of the war. He grew up in the aftermath and liked to tell me family history. Long story but they were poor farmers of Scottish ancestry. They were Republicans, never owned a slave, and didn’t believe in it. At the time, slavery was legal. They only fought for the Confederacy after they were attacked by Union soldiers that burned their farms, stole their stock, and left them to starve. That’s one reason we still call it The War of Northern Aggression today. Most of the South didn’t own slaves but were not the type to roll over either. They saw the North as wannabe kings and overlords. They left that in Scotland.
None of my ancestors fought for slavery. They fought in self-defense. My ancestors came here during the Scottish clearances to escape that kind of thing but being Scotts they weren’t about to lay down and not fight. LOL My original ancestor fought with Washington during the Revolution.
He said that the slave owners were wealthy plantation owners, wealthy business owners, and wealthy politicians that he called Southern Democrats. Even my own grandmother said they were and are pure evil. He said that in his young years after the war they were so poor that a lot were sharecroppers that worked the fields along with former slaves. He said the slave owners were petrified of the slaves they owned. They knew a lot of the population didn’t believe in it. The reason it was against the law to teach them to read was because it would keep them from being ignorant and would make them more dangerous. At the time the slave owners didn’t believe they were fully human and to them they were more like livestock.
Democrats were evil then and they are evil now. All Southerners at that time were fiercely independent and wanted to control their own lives. The rich in the South were extremely rich and the poor were extremely poor.
I see a lot of what happened then happening now. Dems still want their slaves. They are importing them as fast as they can. They still want class warfare.
