an in-depth review of the Lever Action 30-30 Winchester. Don't laugh this dog
Because the 50-50 was just too large.
Inherited a Stevens 20 gauge side by side. Beautiful shotgun, but have never fired it.
Two triggers on this thing, and it looks solid, but also pretty old. Not sure if anything but birdshot should be used in it...
I wish! I have been looking into custom slings for mine. These photos are from www.buffalobrandleather.net.
I drool for hours over some of the Marlins on the gallery page.
Unless you have a lever gun that is magazine fed, like the Browning BLR. Mine is in .308 Winchester.
To be honest I’ve never owned a 30-30 for a variety of reasons but mainly because based on hunting cartridges and power it’s on the anemic side. Got my first rifle in 1957 when I was 7 and it was ab old surplus Springfield in 30-06 that had been sporterized by RF Sedgley. When I got out of the ARMY in 72 I bought a Ruger 77 in 7mm Magnum and deer hunted with it until 1980 when I bought my first Weatherby in 300 Weatherby Mag and I’ve hunted with nothing but Weatherby’s since. I’ve got a 340, 300, 257 and a 240. that pretty much covers all my rifle needs. I say that so folks will get an idea which way I go with hunting calibers. Now with that said I have taken 2 deer with a 30-30 both inside a 100 yards one dropped instantly from a neck shot and the other only went about 15 yards from a heart lung shot.
While I’m no fan of the caliber itself it’s perfectly acceptable within it’s limit’s, with those limits being range and size of the critter you’re after. What’s interesting is how popular the 30-30 has become here in Texas for hog hunting, it’s like they were meant for each other, the ranges are usually within 50 yards and we now bullets designed specifically for the 30-30 which do quite well on hog’s. And I have to admit that the Model 94 Winchester just feels right in the hand, light and quick handling. Inside a 100 yards I’d have no problem taking it deer hunting. I’ve got a 94 Trapper model in 45 LC that’s taken 3 deer and probably a couple of dozen hogs using 300 grain hard cast lead bullets, a 30-30 would only be an improvement over that.
I have my fathers Marlin 336 in .35 Remington that was passed to me as an inheritance. He put a few deer on the table (venison).
Or an 1895 Winchester.
...or Savage 99 (box or rotary mag)!
;^)
He wasn’t counting deer in the mafia.
Other than that, I loved mine.
Okay, so maybe they got hurt just a little bit.
Okay, so maybe there was some injury.
Okay, so maybe they were destroyed. Who are you going to complain to?
My first deer rifle was a Glenfield 30 I picked up new at Fed-mart for $58. I took it over to the Proven Products appliance store for their gunsmith to mount a set of Williams Foolproof peep sights on it and I reloaded it with a LeeLoader.
Sister's got a boyfriend daddy doesn't likeHas inspired a lot of guys to go out and buy one. ;-)
Now he's sittin' out back, 30/30 in his lap
In the blue bug zapper light
Plus the lever doesn't flop around like a spare pair of handcuffs lol.
I know many of us grew up using 30-30 lever actions as our first deer guns. It’s a great balance gun on power/range/penetration. I need to get me a few ones. My last one was stolen about 30 years ago.
Then a .357 lever action / revolver combo.
Because it kills white-tailed deer real good. It may be possible that my brother-in-law’s .300 Win Mag kills them more dead, but I have not seen anything to support that. What his rifle mostly seems to do is to tempt him to take shots he has no business taking.
Mossberg 464 SPX. Basically an AR30-30.

Ugly, yet oddly practical.
Jack O’Connor’s favorite Indian guide carried a 30-30. Killed plenty of moose and grizzlies.
150-180 grain .30 cal. at around 2400 FPS is deer magic. The .308 Win, 30-06 and .300 Win Mag just extend the range.
The Savage 99’s rotary magazine solved the problem long before it was a problem.
