Alec Baldwin ‘Rust’ camera crew walked off the set in protest before the fatal shooting

Labor trouble had been brewing for days on the dusty set at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe.

The cinematographer who was accidentally killed, Halyna Hutchins, had been advocating for safer conditions for her team, said one crew member who was on the set.

As the camera crew — members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees — spent about an hour assembling their gear at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, several nonunion crew members showed up to replace them, the knowledgeable person said.

A member of the producer staff then ordered the union members to leave the set. She said if they didn’t leave, the producers would call security to remove them.

“Corners were being cut — and they brought in nonunion people so they could continue shooting,” the knowledgeable person said.

There were two misfires on the prop gun on Saturday and one the previous week, the person said, adding “there was a serious lack of safety meetings on this set.”

The shooting occurred about six hours after the union camera crew left.

Baldwin, the film’s star who also served as a producer on the film, was apparently rehearsing a scene outside the church of the Bonzana Creek Ranch set...

The scene involved a gun fight that began in the church, and then Baldwin’s character was supposed to back out of the church, according to production notes obtained by The Times. It was the 12th day of a 21-day shoot.

Agree. A gun is yours the minute it’s in your hands.

Yes - I check to see if a round is in the chamber. I don't unchamber every round to see if it is live or blank, though, nor would I expect actors to do that on set when they're dealing with multiple guns all the time.

Unless I hear otherwise, this actually looks deliberate on the part of whomever put that live round in the gun.

BREAKING: Alec Baldwin's Gun Loaded With One Live Round in Place of a Blank

Can that be an accident? Why would anyone have a live round on the set?

Hmmm...Had not read about a misfire previous week.

Not sure what difference it would make. I have shot hundreds if not thousands of blanks in training.

A blank misfire is just a 'poof' and generally your gun just jams because there was not enough pressure to cycle the next round into the chamber.

Not dangerous and certainly not fatal.

But since the media has no idea what they are talking about its impossible to say for sure.

Thank You.

He pointed the gun at the set crew and pulled the trigger.

Show me the film if they were recording.

If they are not recording, he is in deep.

Being an arrogant asshole all your life can lead to this kind of outcome.

Lock him up.

It was a screen capture that was reported to be a direct quote from Baldwin using the F word.

Evidently he was mad about being told to make another take.

I have yet another dumb question: Why would there be any live rounds on set?

I can imagine a misfire with a semi automatic, but this was a western and the gun would have to be a revolver and you have to work at firing a revolver and any idiot could see whether there were blanks by just looking at the cylinder.

He obviously pointed the gun at the victim and deliberately pulled the trigger.

Maybe he meant to scare her or piss her off, but what he did is criminal negligence at best and murder at worst.

It was one bullet. Went through the poor cinematographer and ended in the director’s clavicle.

I would like them to define the frequently used term “misfired”.

I agree with this. I see actors on Twitter acting as though they are exempt from the #1 gun rule. They aren’t. They should not blindly shoot and aim something a prop man gave them. No one is exempt.

An attorney could crucify Baldwin on the stand. “Everyone holding a gun has the responsibility to check if it’s loaded. Did you check?”

No way to worm out of it.

“Since you didn’t know if the gun was loaded, Mr. Baldwin, did you make sure there was no one in the potential line of fire before you pulled the trigger?”

Again, where is the wiggle room !?

I’d also like to know if it is standard when REHEARSING a shooting scene to even pull the trigger. They were not shooting but rehearsing. Why actually fire????

They weren’t shooting
. The LA Times said it was a rehearsal of the scene.

Thanks. After I posted that I wondered if the facts were accurate, it has been a long time since I read the story. I should have researched it.

This all sounds like a good reason to have can NRA certified gun safety session before any movie involving firearms is made. And an NRA trained observer on hand anytime weapons are being used in a movie. If just stop using actual weapons in movies. Just point your finger and say hang bang.

If the bullet was placed in that gun by a disgruntled Union employee as some sort of stunt, that man should also face the wrath of the law.

And yes, Alec should have personally checked any gun he intended to fire, but he's an anti-gun idiot and he hasn't the slightest clue how to properly handle a firearm.

Show me the film.

If he is pointing guns at the set crew and pulling a trigger, I have a problem with that.

So does the young woman that was murdered.

LA Times: “accidental.” Well, then. Baldwin is guilty of deliberately shooting an innocent person. Sad how some people are not ethical and cautious around guns.
