A distraught Alec Baldwin repeatedly asked why was he given a “hot gun” after his prop weapon accidentally discharged on his New Mexico film set Thursday, killing a cinematographer and injuring the director, witnesses have claimed.
The tragic accident unfolded while Baldwin was filming his upcoming western film “Rust” at Bonanza Creek Ranch in Sante Fe.
Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, 42, died and director, Joel Souza, 48, was injured after they were both struck when the gun discharged, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said.
Immediately after the incident, an eyewitness told Hollywood gossip site Showbiz 411 that Baldwin started asking how he could have been given a “hot gun” – meaning a firearm loaded with real ammunition.
“In all my years, I’ve never been handed a hot gun,” the actor allegedly kept saying.

That’s what I posted in 31. A camera angle where he faces directly at the lens, or nearly so, and pulls the trigger. Maybe even fanning the gun. I suspect it wasn’t that, however.
An article that I read said they were shot while filming a scene.
Other stories I have read say that they are still investigating what sort of 'projectile' struck the two victims.
Given that particular phrasing from the Sheriffs, I doubt that actual live ammunition was involved.
Blanks can kill if shot at a person at room distances.

They could have been filming a scene panning down the barrel of the gun. The bullet passes through the camera person and hits the director in the shoulder.
Think abut movie scenes... actor with gun aimed at target...where is the camera? Sometimes off to the side, other times straight in line.
Regardless, after this Baldwin should be restricted to using only the finger-gun while saying “Bang!”.
Well if it was me I would fire one off into the ground just to make sure but its doubtful Alex Baldwin is much of a gun guy. Whoever loaded that weapon needs to face the music.
While serving time for manslaughter.
Jon-Erick Hexum and Brandon Lee are two others killed by blanks. The concussion alone can kill you.
Hexum did something stupid. He picked a blank loaded gun, put it to his head and pulled the trigger. Shattered his skull.
I remember a woman being killed by a blank in Durango Colorado back in 1973 or so with a blank loaded firearm.
Reminds me of the old Bela Lugosi movie THE DEATH KISS(1932)
Seems like an actor shooting both the camera gal and director would lead one to think that’s what happened. It’s not an unusual shot in any case, actor in close up pointing gun directly at camera.
Freegards
Seriously, live rounds on a movie set? What could go wrong... just did.
1. All firearms are loaded.
2. NEVER point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
3. Keep your finger off the trigger until sights are lined up on the target.
4. Be sure of your target and what is behind it.
Break one of these rules and you might be alright....break two........you see the results.
Looks as though Mr. Liberal Baldwin just had a crash course in firearms etiquette at others expense. Can’t blame the gun here.
Democrats and firearms go along like Bolsheviks and the US Constitution.
It is dangerous to expect healthy outcomes from such mixtures.
meaning a firearm loaded with real ammunition.

I will wait to find out if the gun really had “real ammunition or not” but my guess is it wasn’t. Few (it seems) know the “wadding” in a blank becomes a projectile when filed and can be deadly at close range.
Why was he pointing a gun at those people with his finger on the trigger?
Nope, even with prop guns safety rules apply.
I think wax is a component.
There was a tv actor, years ago, that was killed when he "pretended" to shoot himself in the head.
That said, Baldwin and everyone else there had to be aware that blanks are dangerous and potentially lethal.
uh...No, it did NOT!
He pulled the trigger intentionally!
The problems are that He Pointed it at a person, and that it was loaded with a live round, or had a round in the barrel propelled by a blank charge.
It’s a film set, maybe there were cameras rolling a recorded the incident.
Didn’t he shoot the camera gal and director?
