The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) , a unit of the U.S. Department of Commerce under NOAA,which sits alongside its terrestrial National Weather Service, has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch for all of Earth for Sunday, September 26 for the possibility of G1 or G2 storm conditions.
On Thursday, a sunspot, known as AR2871, experienced two explosive eruptions, each producing a significant M-class solar flare. Solar flares are classified according to their strength, on a B-C-M-X scale. B flares are the smallest while X are the largest. Similar to the Richter scale used to help quantify earthquakes, each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. Within each letter class, there is also a finer scale that usually extends from 1-9. Within the powerful X class of flares, the number could exceed 9 to reflect a massive flare event.

AR2871 initially produced a M1.8 flare and a subsequent coronal mass ejection (CME). According to the SWPC, initial analysis and model run indicate an overtaking of the slightly slower CME that was also produced by region 2871 earlier on the 23rd with an arrival anticipated for the first half of September 27.
A coronal hole high speed stream, known as CH HSS for short, is due to hit the Earth by midday on the 26th. The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) says, “Isolated G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is likely 26 September as a positive polarity CH HSS extension from the Northern crown becomes geoeffective.”
Right now, the SWPC says there is a 30% chance of only active geomagnetic activity on the 26th, a 40% chance of a “minor storm”, a 25% chance of a “moderate storm”, and a 1% chance of a “strong-extreme storm.”

Aluminum actually. It shields against RF waves, but not Magnetic waves. Faraday shields require Steel or Iron.
Most people who write about this stuff for public discussion, Really don’t understand what they are writing about.
Relax until there’s a big X flare pointed right at us.
“Easy to kill them overnight as nothing flowing then.”
If its night can the local grid even be impacted by a surge coming from solar sources ?
I would think the solar influence could only be while the sun’s visible — aka daylight hours.
Thermal blankets to prevent forest fires from burning the giant redwoods.
Noooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Is there any potential damage to solar pv panels from this ?”
Only if they are in orbit and attached to a satellite.
UPGRADED GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH: Earth’s magnetic field might receive a double blow this weekend. First, a stream of solar wind is expected to hit on Sept. 26th. Next, a CME might graze Earth during the early hours of Sept. 27th. The combined effect could produce geomagnetic storms as strong as category G2 with auroras visible in northern-tier US states during the night of Sept. 26-27.
Unless, of course, you happen to have taken the jab and now have graphene oxide in your veins, then even a tin foil had won't save you.
“You need very long conductors in order to be effected by the magnetic field. Hence the power grid is pretty much the only thing in danger.”
The conductors of the power grid do not in any meaningful way couple to geomagnetic field variations.
What happens is that the variations penetrate deep into the earth, inducing currents which can make the ground potential between two geographically distant substations to vary significantly. This causes currents to flow between them and if the currents flow through a transformer, it can under certain conditions destroy it.
That’s how a solar storm impacts the power grid (or pipelines....or...)
Don’t be silly. Trees are susceptible to solar magnetic storms.
So, I should stay up tonite and re-read “One Second After”?
Do I need an umbrella?
And hopefully, the squirely Lil bastage who planned and funded this will be zapped - slowly.
Not unless they are growing in iron polluted soil. smile. /sarcasm
Guns would still work.
So that would include whole home backup generators?
WE’RE DOOMED
Hmm. Interesting question. I doubt the panels would matter. But then again... My “20 year panels” only lasted 1 year. Down to 30% from when I first installed them so in to the trash they go. Maybe it was sunspots.....
