Geomagnetic Storm Watch Issued for Earth for Sunday
weatherboy.com ^ | SEPTEMBER 24, 2021

The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) , a unit of the U.S. Department of Commerce under NOAA,which sits alongside its terrestrial National Weather Service, has issued a Geomagnetic Storm Watch for all of Earth for Sunday, September 26 for the possibility of G1 or G2 storm conditions.

On Thursday, a sunspot, known as AR2871, experienced two explosive eruptions, each producing a significant M-class solar flare. Solar flares are classified according to their strength, on a B-C-M-X scale. B flares are the smallest while X are the largest. Similar to the Richter scale used to help quantify earthquakes, each letter represents a ten-fold increase in energy output. Within each letter class, there is also a finer scale that usually extends from 1-9. Within the powerful X class of flares, the number could exceed 9 to reflect a massive flare event.

...

AR2871 initially produced a M1.8 flare and a subsequent coronal mass ejection (CME). According to the SWPC, initial analysis and model run indicate an overtaking of the slightly slower CME that was also produced by region 2871 earlier on the 23rd with an arrival anticipated for the first half of September 27.

A coronal hole high speed stream, known as CH HSS for short, is due to hit the Earth by midday on the 26th. The National Weather Service’s Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) says, “Isolated G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storming is likely 26 September as a positive polarity CH HSS extension from the Northern crown becomes geoeffective.”

Right now, the SWPC says there is a 30% chance of only active geomagnetic activity on the 26th, a 40% chance of a “minor storm”, a 25% chance of a “moderate storm”, and a 1% chance of a “strong-extreme storm.”

Is there any potential damage to solar pv panels from this ?

Do we disconnect them at any time ?

Do we put a tarp over everything ?

Do we take them off the roof and put them underground for 24 hours ?

Maybe it will kill the Coronavirus.

A June 2013 study by Lloyd’s of London and Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) in the U.S. showed that if the Carrington event happened in modern times, damages in the U.S. could exceed $2.6 trillion, roughly 15% of the nation’s annual GDP.

So not as bad as electing Biden, then.

There is never a direct danger to solar panels from a solar storm. Nor any other electronics that are isolated from the gird.

In fact the only thing that is under any threat is the power grid and anything plugged into it. So a converter hooked to the power grid is in danger if the event is very big and a large power surge is backfed into it.

You need very long conductors in order to be effected by the magnetic field. Hence the power grid is pretty much the only thing in danger.

Solar wind is always flowing from the Sun and towards Earth but coronal holes are known for releasing enhanced solar wind. Coronal holes can develop anywhere on the sun and are more common during solar minimum.

I do believe they got this backward.

I suppose that theoretically the surge could go through the power inverter and damage the solar panels. Just turn off the grid tie breaker if worried about it.

Very cool (hot) website. . Bookmarking for my daily web surf of what the beings on Erf have coming their way...

Usually watch the sun and asteroids on

But your site looks better for the sun

Also like usgs for earthquakes ..... you know ... getting a fuller picture.

Unlike sunspots, coronal holes are only visible in the ultraviolet and don’t determine solar minimum or maximum. They are, however, more likely to happen on the sun’s equator during solar minimum which affects earth to a greater degree.

Well got 5 inverters tied to the grid 24/7.

Easy to kill them overnight as nothing flowing then.

Hate to lose an entire day of production by being paranoid.

Would like to know time-of-day that the risk is highest.

We already know the steepest angle to the sun is the hours around solar noon. Where I am that is about 1:30 pm local time.

Has any reports emerged as to the UTC times they expect the most radiation ?
