Cattle for milk and meat production are responsible for about 9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Methane — a gas about 25 times more climate-damaging than CO2 but which breaks down after just a decade — is spewed into the atmosphere in large quantities each time the 1 billion cows on the planet burp and fart.
And while scientists have shown that eating less meat is a necessary step to greening the farming sector — particularly in industrialized countries, where the average person eats three times as much as in poorer ones — world leaders have mostly avoided policies to achieve this.
So the game is on to come up with climate-friendly steaks. Meat ones.
The secret, according to a study published in the journal PLOS One earlier this year, is feeding them red seaweed every day. By mixing small amounts of Asparagopsis taxiformis into the fattening feed of 20 Angus-Hereford steers, researchers at the University of California Davis, in the US, cut methane emissions by 80%. […]
The influence of seaweed on the climate footprint of beef is “massively overestimated,” said Matthew Hayek, assistant professor at the Department of Environmental Studies at New York University.
While cattle in the US spend most of their lives on pastures and meadows, the study looked only at cows on feedlots. “Cattle emit the most methane, over 80%, when they are on pasture and eating grass,” said Hayek. During fattening, the last phase of their lives, they emit 11% of their total methane — and this is where the seaweed in the study comes into play. …

I’d rather feed them politicians.
fishy
Try it on pigs, first.
They’ll eat about anything...
The Aussies used to feed their lambs and sheep Fisk. The taste was off putting. They have since returned to grazing and feed. Now their lamb is much improved.
Hubris has been with us since the dawn of Homo sapiens (more like Homo cretinus today).
If the human race survives, our era will be looked upon as a time of mass delusions, pseudo science, and rampant insanity.
I learned today on another thread that the terms "eskimo" and "elderly" are slurs.
What exactly is "Fisk"? Never heard of it.
Feed the mayonnaise to the tuna - save a lot of work.
Looks like the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish word for “fish”.
Lots of web pages that talk about putting fish in sheep diet.
Everthing serves a purpose, in the place it was designed to be. So if we start harvesting seaweed to feed cows, what could possibly go wrong? How would this affect our seas and oceans? All efforts by humans to change nature have backfired, as far as I know. Kudzu, cane toads, European starlings, Chinese tallow trees, Africanized bees, mosquitofish etc.
But hey, who am I to point out facts?
Me Too!
And feed grass to the fish. Makes perfect sense.
I am more curious if it will make the steaks taste fishy. Had to throw that out there.

It might well. I notice when I buy grass-feed all natural steaks the taste is different from grain-feed beef. It’s sweeter and one might say it indeed has a slightly grassy overtone. Not bad, but different.
Put Beano in their feed.
I want to burn used windmill blades and spent solar cells to produce electricity. That’s my idea of the ultimate green recycling plan!
