“pack a day” means that and any amount greater.
In any case I wish you luck finding a number for that now. My stats come from the ‘80s when government agencies just published the data they collected and collated.
About ten years ago I tried to find such a statistic on the internet searching every medical source of data, gov and private, and after a couple of fruitless hours gave up. It was obvious to me then that real figures on lung cancer rates was no longer being published for public consumption.
I started to search but the following came up quickly and for a more recent study (2018) with a close approximation to the 1 in 6:
https://www.verywellhealth.com/what-percentage-of-smokers-get-lung-cancer-2248868 There's table that indicates (for male smokers), chance is 14.8%, which is about 1 in 6.75.
Thanks! That is a lot more than I could find 10 yrs ago when I tried to research it. I don’t know how credible that site is (what their sources are) but I’ll take it at face value.
That said, they put a lot of caveats on the way they apply the data to different groups. They also throw shade on previous data by saying “there wasn’t a lot of study done in the past.” I am skeptical of that. In the ‘80s they were well along the track of collecting every bit of data possible on smoking and its effects.
A dear cousin of mine died from lung cancer at age 70 although she was never a smoker, nor was her husband. Her father, however, was a constant pipe smoker back in the 40s and 50s while she was growing up.
the largest cohort of lung cancer people are or has been Chinese women. They cook with oils in poorly ventilated settings.

That is very confusing. It doesn’t give percentages of the population really and it doesn’t differentiate between non-smokers and smokers.
Did they smoke?.................
No
