A major maritime industry association on Monday backed plans for a global surcharge on carbon emissions from shipping to help fund the sector’s shift toward climate-friendly fuels.
The International Chamber of Shipping said it’s proposing to the United Nations that all vessels trading globally above a certain size should pay a set amount per metric ton of carbon dioxide they emit.
Environmental groups welcomed the proposal to the the International Maritime Organization, a U.N. body, but cautioned that it doesn’t specify what carbon price would be supported by the group, which represents commercial shipowners and operators covering over 80% of the world merchant fleet.
“We will know they are serious about real progress when they embrace a level of ambition consistent with what climate vulnerable island nations have already proposed,” said Aoife O’Leary, director of global transportation at the Environmental Defense Fund. …

>> These groups are leeches. They Have absolutely nothing to do with the industry
But they no doubt have a high-gloss magazine to spew their Woke BS.
Been there in 1978

Are they going to switch back to sails?
Solar power?
The only other options is nuclear power, I don’t see that as being environmentally friendly in the long run.
We get those fancy “machinist” trade magazines at my shop.
They have great ideas that may possibly work if you a few million to blow.
There was a time not all that long ago when those magazines were a useful to machinists.
The world may change but when you have to make just one part, a million dollar process just isn’t going to work in your favor.
They’ll squash the fixed income people into the ground
What you say happens a lot. Another thing that happens is someone in the industry thinks they have a leg up in bypassing the new regulations. So they propose the new regulation to harm competitors. Perhaps someone specializing in fairly small cargo ships (who also hopes the new regulation wouldn't be applied to).
So, they think running four smaller ships would create less Carbon dioxide than one ship?
The joke is always in them if they succeed getting the simple and easy-to-meet refs passed. The greenies are NEVER EVER satisfied. They are masters of incrementalism, just like communists. They keep coming back with tougher and tougher regs, year after year, decade after decade. At some point they have bled the industry dry and move in to another one. The proposed mercury regs on coal plants was their bridge too far. Of course, that became moot because they succeeded in making it almost impossible to burn coal.
What a cargo ship load of crap. They want to raise rates under the cover of “greenwashing” their operations to increase profit. They won’t do anything but produce slick new ad campaigns and buy indulgences from The Holy Goreacle.
I put a lot of solar onto my roof (with related inverter and batteries) to remove some of the high volatility of energy costs from my budget. I like green tech from a libertarian stand point (i.e. I can make it work fairly efficiently for me because I'm not trying to meet some standard that has no bearing on throughput). But I'm in a rare situation where it works well (i.e. my retirement investments are plenty to retire from soon -- time to spend money on lowering lifestyle expenses, I live in the south where we have plenty of sunshine -- especially during the time of the year we use the most power for A/C, I have a large roof facing south toward the equator to help me out during the winter). So very few people are in a situation that checks off all those boxes to make solar work well. That's why I hate the Dims' one-size-fits-all approach to green energy.
I bought this brand new house because it has no exposed window towards West or South. And we have front porch and back porch to block the sun. Our electric bill averages $34.50 / month in NE Florida.
