Great intro. I remember the song not being approved of because it brought open the black experience. Another great one was “The Son Of Hickory Holler’s Tramp”.
Certainly better than ‘Theme from Shaft’ but then it’s intro was right up there too.
Love that song.
I heard Isaac Hayes in concert in '72 or '73.

Papa was the biggest loser of all time, in my book.
When I heard the song as a youngster, I took the lyric to read “And when he died, all he left us was a loan.” I wondered whether the loan was ever repaid.
First two notes set the tone for the whole song. I have had the pleasure of playing it a time or two. 🎸🔊🎹🎤

Took a short R&R trip to Asheville, NC late last week and the Temptations best of CD was one on our playlist. Thoroughly enjoyed it. That is a great song . . . but they had several great songs.

I had a friend who thought the lyric from the Golden Earring song was “When the bullet hits the phone”...and I had another friend who said (he was pulling my leg I am sure) he thought the lyrics to the journey song were “I come to you with broken arms”!
