Best Prep Food?
09/01/2021 | 4everontheright

Posted on 09/01/2021 12:50:14 PM PDT by 4everontheRight

Folks - I want to buy some "prep" food for my son & his soon-to-be-bride. I want to make sure they have some stored food & the easiest way (unlike how I've done it) is to just buy some stored food from Patriot Food Supply or such. I'm curious if any Freepers have purchased & what they consider the best options, where you have purchased from or what advice you might have. Appreciate the advice!

“They have came a long way since the days of the dehydrated beef and pork patty.”

Those were awesome. And now they are gone.

I’m not into prepping food but I can give you a solid tip on a piece of gear you absolutely need to prepare it:

You are correct. How / where you live dictates how and what to prep. In a world where people run out of food/ clean water the prepared will stand out. Do not stand out in a SHTF. You have 7-14 days before you stand out or get out. If not then your dead.

People are evil when hungry. Especially the pampered, never missed a meal types. The will kill you even if they die in the process.

Bugging out to the unknown = dead
Bugging in in the city / high density suburbs = dead for most

There is no easy answers or magic gear.

Corned beef hash is great lots of calories and fat

I also keep canned ground beef and lots of canned salmon (canned salmon is ectremly calorie/nutrient dense)

Beans, rice, cornmeal, canned stuff that requires no water.

We bought a Harvest Right about six weeks ago and it’s been running every day since. Not a single problem - it will more than pay for itself before the year is through.

I can my maple syrup.

I buy a gallon (cheapest that way) heat it to boiling on the stove, pour it hot into hot jars, put on the hot lids and screw down the band and put aside to coll.

It keeps indefinitely. I have yet to have any get moldy or crystalize in the jars.

They were decent if you could heat them up and great if you had ramen noodles to mix them with. There was nothing you could do with chicken ala king and the ham and chicken loaf to make them edible.

I think having professionally prepped food is useful as a start, but they should be trained on how to make it themselves.

Agreed and grow it themselves as well.

Buy what they eat.

Canned goods and pantry staples.

Manual can opener.

Cleaning and sanitizing products.

1950 edition Betty Crocker cookbook.

Compile a list for cooking substitutions.

Basic tool box - filled.

A solar oven if you have the $$$ or plans for a very cheap homemade solar oven, large cardboard box, tape and heavy duty foil to make one. The “CooKit” works good enough - http://solarcooking.org/plans/ . Old cookware to use in it and a can of bbq grill spray paint if the cookware needs it.

Where’d you get it and how much did it cost?

Runnings had one and it was $3200!!!!

I thought that was a bit over the top.

Although I like the idea of freeze drying, no way would I buy one for that much, although I would not turn it down if someone gave me one.

Don’t forget water or some sort of water filtration device like campers use.

Another idea:
Pre-packaged mre’s are fine in a pinch. BUT I have learned the hard way that pantry moths can get into the tightest snap top containers and will chew thru mylar. And they appear out of nowhere. So for the important long-term staples that moths love, like pancake mix and flour, I’ve personally moved to canned. A few cases of #10 cans are easy to store and stack and waterproof. I have canned white flour, pancake mix, apple slices, dried onions and carrots, dry milk and sugar. These are all 10yrs or better shelf lives. (And if your couch is up against a wall, they can be stored behind it - about 40 cans worth.)
https://providentliving.churchofjesuschrist.org/food-storage/home-storage-center-locations-map?lang=eng#hours%20and%20locations

this is their online selection which is more expensive because of shipping costs, but you can use their mapping function to find a center near you, where they sell smaller and case portions, and you don’t have to be a member of their church to shop.

Congrats and have fun!

Our property has water and streams all over the place.

We are fortunate that way.

Consider this factor - most commercial freeze-dried meals have quite a bit of sodium in them >500mg in many cases. If you are not used to eating that much salt or cannot eat that much salt it may take some getting used to when you need it.

On the flip side, that may be one of the few sources of salt some people are going to have.

Salt is critical for survival and yet it’s one of the most overlooked items in prepping lists that I have seen.

There are a lot of places that finding salt is going to be a real challenge.

Potassium is also essential and potassium chloride can be bought at Swanson Vitamins.

If you have good neighbors that you trust and can comport themselves in times of extreme panic you should be fine.

Most aren’t that fortunate, hence the bugout and head for the hills mentality that I’ve grown to accept.

It’ll last longer than bugging in when they come to your house in tanks and patrols for shipment to a FEMA camp
