‘Sweet, sweet’ Connie Hamzy, subject of Grand Funk Railroad song, dead at 66

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Connie Hamzy, immortalized in a No. 1 rock ‘n’ roll hit by Grand Funk Railroad in 1973, died after a brief illness, KARK-TV reported. She was 66.

Hamzy was the subject in the opening verses of Grand Funk Railroad’s hit, “We’re An American Band,” which spent 17 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100”S. "Sweet, sweet Connie, doin’ her act/She had the whole show and that’s a natural fact,” sang drummer Don Brewer, who also wrote the song.

“I was determined to become a famous groupie,” Hamzy told KTHV in 2019. “I really was.

Beginning in the late 1960s, Hamzy attended dozens of shows at Barton Coliseum in Little Rock, KARK reported.

She also traveled to shows around the country, the television station reported.

She had a tryst with Clinton. It was in one of the books on him back in the day. He met her at the pool at the Hilton or something in Little Rock. He was AG at the time, I think. She agreed to perform oral on him, but they couldn’t find a place that was discreet enough. She had remarked about it to friends, and the story got around. The “dust busters” went to work on her to discredit her. her comment was I’m a slut, not a liar”.

And yet Grand Funk Railroad still isn’t in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But Linda Ronstadt is.

I guess that's how you become ABC News anchor nowadays. The most likely answer is that everybody involved in that story was lying.

I attended, at the same time, the same university as Connie in Little Rock. She had her own entourage on campus! The Cosmopolitan article made her appear to come from a low-class, ignorant family and that she was desperate for attention. Little Rock in the early 70s had nothing to offer lower middle class families as far as steps up the ladder of success. Most women were very eager to snag a successful guy as opposed to feeling that they could make a career through the use of their intellect. Connie was liberated, in her own way.
Just because some band member writes a lyric in a popular song doesn’t define the person being portrayed. BTW, substitute teaching is infinitely harder than giving a BJ.
