[history]
HONOLULU — If you’re homeless and looking for temporary shelter in Honolulu, expect a visit from a robotic police dog that will scan your eye to make sure you don’t have a fever.
That’s just one of the ways public safety agencies are starting to use Spot, the best-known of a new commercial category of robots that trot around with animal-like agility.

It’s appropriate to use an unarmed police robot in high-risk situations, primarily because it’s expendable and does not need to deploy deadly force to protect itself.
During felony stops of vehicles it makes sense to have an unarmed robot approach the vehicle, send video back to the cops, ID the occupants, and relay commands to the occupants. That seems preferable to having nervous cops with weapons drawn make the initial approach.
For another example, sending in a swarm of unarmed robots to subdue a barricaded subject means nobody has to die that day.

as Boston Dynamics becomes part of South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Company, which in June closed an $880 million deal for a controlling stake in the robotics firm. The real scandal in this story is hidden somewhere in the middle. At least not the CCP.
