How the 2021 New Orleans Jazz Fest pulled off a Rolling Stones surprise: 'Mick said yes' - 'It's the biggest band in the world doing an American tour that nobody knew about'

...the announcement that Jagger and company will try again, at the postponed 2021 Jazz Fest, caught just about everyone by surprise — even members of the Jazz Fest staff and board. Until Thursday, the Stones organization managed to keep secret not just the Oct. 13 New Orleans appearance but the band's entire 13-date fall stadium tour.

“There may never have been anything that was so big and so quiet,” said Quint Davis, the Jazz Fest's longtime producer and director. “It’s the biggest band in the world doing an American tour that nobody knew about. And they’re playing Jazz Fest.”

...an extra day was added to the schedule.

That also enables the festival to add a few dozen local acts that were initially left out. But that afternoon at the Fair Grounds, the other stages will go dark when the Rolling Stones start up on the Acura Stage...

“Think of everything that had to fall in place," Davis said. “They had to decide to do a North American tour. They had to decide to do it in September/October. And they had to want to do” Jazz Fest.

Davis spent years lobbying for the Rolling Stones to come to Jazz Fest. He traveled the world to attend rehearsals and concerts, and built relationships with the band’s team, including manager Joyce Smyth. The Stones’ health-related cancellation in 2019 came as a huge disappointment.

...The Rolling Stones “don’t play festivals, much less come play one on our stage under a tent. They had to want to do this.”

..For Davis, it was important to have the Rolling Stones perform within the context of what Jazz Fest is. “The three magic words are ‘on Jazz Fest.’ This is the Rolling Stones on Jazz Fest...

Will the Strolling Bones be taking the stage in wheelchairs?

Quint Davis has been with the festival since it began in 1970. Jazz Fest founder George Wein was co-founder of the the Newport Folk Festival and is still alive at 95.

A documentary is being made about the Jazz Festival and it would seem that they may really be counting on some footage of the Rolling Stones in it.

Don’t know if they’ll manage a duet or two on stage.

As to the Stones they are now celebrating 59 years of performing.

Mick and the boys kissing up to the black folk. Black musicians were instrumental in rock’s early days and white artists profited the most. It’s called keeping the lid on.

I saw the Stones in 2019 in Chicago, after Mick had his valve surgery, and I can tell you that he had more energy than most 25 year olds that I’ve seen. They are no where close to being in wheelchairs. Fabulous show and performance!

It was the Rolling Stones who got Shindig to book Howlin’ Wolf on air as a requirement for them to appear.

Let’s see…..

1965 to 2021 is…..

56 years.

56 years from 1965 is…..

1909.

So this would be like people in 1965 watching a band from 1909.

That’s the cats meow.

From the article’s description of some of the invited acts and with the Rolling Stones appearance, I think the promoters operate with some degree of false advertising. Its more a music festival than a true “Jazz” festival.

Compare who the New Orleans festival is hosting versus the 2019 Newport JAZZ Festival:

The Stones are more adept at playing American music than 99% of American bands.

And you can bet your sweet bippy they’ll have a load of traditional jazz ready.

I love the Stones and Mick Jagger, but someone needs to tell them to stop.

Mick will be 78 years old on Monday.

So this would be like people in 1965 watching a band from 1909.

That’s a pretty wild way to look it at.
