BiWeekly Prepper Thread (for these strange days)
7/10/2021

Posted on 07/10/2021 4:06:36 PM PDT by Pollard

This is the BiWeekly Prepper Thread for all things prepping.

In these Strange Days, it's not a bad idea to have a little set back. Or a lot. I think we all saw empty shelves last year. We didn't go without though. Since I'm a prepper, I stocked up on TP and food and even bought a small freezer for meat when I saw empty shelves in Italy. My wife no longer thinks my prepping mentality is a little wacky, 20 years later. This year is turning out to be the year of systems hacking. Extreme weather events can happen most anywhere at any time preventing travel to a store.

The first thread was based on Water and this second thread on Food Storage and Preservation which I'm providing some related downloads for. Anything involving prepping can be discussed though.

Here are the download links. You can browse all files in the folders and preview most of them as most are pdf files. Alternatively, you can download all files as a zip file which is 42.9mb using the bottom link.

Curing (folder with multiple files)

Drying (folder with multiple files)

Misc (folder with multiple files)

Storage (folder with multiple files)
https://permasteader.com/cloud/index.php/s/AXYDL3t6eQ5WcRL

All of the above in a zip file, food.zip
https://permasteader.com/cloud/index.php/s/nFWW6JA48ajrfRz

Here are the links to the AZ Granny info from the previous thread which covers most things prepping related.

Individual html files
https://permasteader.com/AZ_Granny/stor01.html

As a zip file with the html files in a folder. Save the zip, unzip and you'll have a folder with 75 html files. Keep those files in the folder and the links will work when you open in a browser.

Good post. I would add — be leery of rusted cans as well. A tiny bit of surface rust is probably ok. We don’t have enough storage and tend to keep more than we have proper room for. We’ve thrown away a few things that either froze or spent a good amount of time at high ambient temps like the high 90s. Texture gets real bad in both cases.

And Dawn is the best for cutting that grease out of those buckets.

Acidic foods, like pineapple and tomatoes, and really any fruits, can wreak havoc on cans.

They eat away at the coating on the inside of the canning. It’s called detinning.

I make my own homemade cranberry sauce and in canning jars, it lasts about forever.

I have bought a bunch of 1/2 gallon canning jars and vacuum seal them with our vacuum sealer attachments. The less air, the better. I store my pasta, nuts, spices, that way and am even trying chocolate.

Good to know about white flour because mine is close to its expiration date and while I know they are meaningless in many cases, something in paper is not sealed at all, so I wasn’t sure.

Update on my long-storing squash test: The last “Calabasas de las Aguas” started to feel corky, so I cut it open and baked it. It wasn’t anywhere close to spoiling, but it was drying out. The “guts” in the seed cavity looked like cobwebs! The meat wasn’t as sweet as my other squash, but that’s typical for C. mixta squash.

The “Bigger Better Butternut” and “Great Lakes Shark Fin” are still solid.

(For anyone reading who doesn’t know the background, this is a test I’ve been running on squash I grew last year. They were harvested in October, and stored in wooden bins in the basement.)

Squash

I had spaghetti squash once and my mom used to make squash/pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving but other than that, it’s never been something that I was around. I do know, it’s one of the long term root cellar storage items to get people through the winter so I do appreciate your info. I’ll have to start looking into it.

No. We just rolled down the hill without the card board - usually after tripping on a rock.

Spaghetti squash is a favorite here. We prefer it over pasta noodles for spaghetti and alfredo. It keeps well for a few months, but it generally won’t hold up deep into the winter like the denser-fleshed varieties will.

The old-fashioned Waltham butternut is delicious and will last until spring if stored in a cool, dry place.

Last ping on this thread, I swear:) I did some organizing. All the old share links still work but by organizing things, I was able to put everything into one folder called Prepping.

Might want to re-ping your list with a link to this post and to; https://freerepublic.com/focus/chat/3975055/posts?page=91#91

827.3mb of prepping/homesteading/gardening info. Try to take only what you’re interested in so you don’t blow up my hosting bandwidth. It’s not going anywhere anytime soon so there’s plenty of time to browse the files. That is unless hosting tells me to cool it. So far the server stats aren’t giving me any warnings and bandwidth is supposed to be unlimited but “unlimited” when it pertains to hosting doesn’t actually mean unlimited.

There’s actually been quite a bit of download activity which is fine. That’s why I uploaded it.

Use the three little dots to the right of a folder or file to download it. If you’re in a folder and want to download several items, tick the check boxes for them and use the “actions” link that will appear up top/left to download them.

PDF files can be previewed directly but html files won’t render and will show the html code instead. There’s not many of those and they’re very small in file size. AZ Granny’s info which are html files are the exception to that. They can be viewed here; https://permasteader.com/AZ_Granny/stor01.html and downloaded as AZ_Granny.zip here; https://permasteader.com/AZ_Granny.zip. The zip file has a folder with the html files. Keep them in the folder and navigation among them with a browser will still work. They simply all have to be in one folder of any name.

Mostly, the other html files are Dutch Oven Recipes but you can just download them as a zip file, unzip and view in your browser. All of them only total up to 791kb.

There are a few .doc files, .xls files and .txt files as well. Text files can be previewed of course. Word .doc files, I’m not sure of and .xls, I doubt it.

There are several hundred files and I have not opened every single one. I’m pretty sure I got rid of any copyrighted stuff. There was also marijuana and magic mushroom growing info and I’m pretty sure I pulled all of those out as well. I downloaded most of this as a torrent years ago and the pot and shroom stuff was in there as well as some books still under copyright.

I searched the file for “marijuana”, “cannabis” and got rid of those. Then I sorted by size and went through anything over about 5mb to weed out books. I left a couple of books in there that are over 100 years old and some books that have no copyright info so I assume they were free pdf files to begin with. Many look like they’re from the 70s when people were trying to save the world from global cooling.

So I think I got things pretty well cleaned up. I have opened many of them and they were all what they were purported to be, no bait and switch stuff.

NP, I was going to do it more slowly but we might not have a lot of time before the demcommies blow things up or the globalists do their great reset crap.

It’s funny, I dragged the fambly from the East coast out to the boonies in rural MO ten years ago. Putting the homestead together starting with forest has been going slower than I would like and getting harder now that I’m a senior citizen so as of a few years ago, I was starting to regret the move. Since this virus crap, summer of riots, the election farce and the demonizing and hunting down of the deplorables, I’m feeling better about my decision, as if the wife.

I do find that flour gets an off taste if kept too long....

speaking of spoilage, I had two cans of tomato powder go bad....they were commercially prepared #10 cans ...the company did refund me....

looking back, the cans were kept on the top shelf in an elongate pantry area we have downstairs....we run a wood stove down there and even though the pantry was in a room with a door, I think the heat got to them....

so, I'll keep cans like that on the opposite wall in the pantry, farther away from the wood stove....

Correction, not that it matters. Everything in the Agriculture folder is what I downloaded as a torrent years ago. Everything else I’ve collected piece by piece over the years.

Pretty good article on long term storage of dry goods in 5 gallon buckets; https://theprepperjournal.com/2013/06/11/food-storage-in-buckets/

Overall decent site with not too many advertisements. Most are insane with their ads. This site just has a few inline in the articles.
