A medical examiner in Michigan says an autopsy has determined that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast, and not a fall as authorities previously reported.
Police in Novi, Michigan, said the mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby Sunday night. The 24-year-old Kivleniek was in a hot tub and tried to get clear with several other people, police Lieutenant Jason Meier said.
The fire department and EMTs got to the private home shortly after 10 p.m. and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Meier said. The Oakland County Medical Examiner's office reported preliminary autopsy results Monday afternoon.
Prior to the autopsy, police said Kivlenieks was believed to have slipped and hit his head on concrete while running from a malfunctioning firework.
"At the moment, we're pretty certain this was a tragic accident," Meier said.
The Blue Jackets and Latvian Hockey Federation announced Kivlenieks' death, with the NHL club saying it resulted from an apparent head injury in a fall. The team's statement made no mention of fireworks.

They must be the same ones the Antifa thugs use.
I was just thinking a couple weeks ago about the tennis ball cannons we used to make as kids. Crazy in hindsight.
This for sure means Gov Mike Dewine will not sign the fireworks Bill on his desk and Ohio will remain one of only two states as a sparklers only state. He will not allow a tragedy go to waste. Meanwhile people will still drive cars, ride bikes, play contact sports, mow their lawns, all while legally getting killed while doing so.

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast in what authorities described Monday as a tragic accident at a Michigan home on the Fourth of July.
Sad. Life is short. Prayers for him and his family.
Here's real reporting...
Legace is the current goalie coach for the Columbus team...which might explain the scrubbing of news reports....given the very high liability profile of the event...alcohol and amateur fireworks don't mix.
Given that the party was at the Michigan home of Columbus Goalie Coach Legace there's more to the story...wrongful death involving illegal? fireworks maybe.
Full coverage? Not exactly, just a cut & paste copy of AP release, almost verbatim, as used by nearly every other news ‘publisher’.
Here’s real reporting...
That report you cited was fluff compared to the Daily Mail reporting. Take a look. Or better yet, don’t. You don’t need the information, it seems!!!

How to light fireworks (artillery shells, mortars)
R.I.P.
Horrible. Reminds me of the young Flyers defenseman from Russia who fell off a boat a few years ago and was killed by the propeller.
