Even without a direct hit from the storm, heavy rain and high winds could overload the remaining, compromised structure. The risk is enhanced by growing doubts as to the quality of the construction. Steel rebar reinforcement specified in the plans seems absent at key points and to be of poor quality.
There is a church nearby, St Joseph’s, and the priests from there have been over to the collapse site to offer prayers and have also had services in the church for the victims. I was glad to see that.

Just think and pray for the residents and families of that complex. A mere 10 days ago they were living a good life on the beach in southeast Florida. Today, the survivors must almost envy the dead as their homes now exist only as rubble! Proof that even in the best of times (tongue-in-cheek) and best of nations, disaster can be VERY close at hand!

Really? Last I knew the firefighters were not allowed to go into the building either. Feeding the cats from a bucket truck... terrified the animals. Just idiotic endeavors like that infuriate me.

The Commander of the Israeli National Rescue Unit said search and rescue personnel found more bodies overnight in the Champlain Towers South collapse in Surfside, Florida.
“At the last 12 hours we found some more people,” Colonel Golan Vach, Commander of the Israeli National Rescue Unit, told CNN’s John Berman on “New Day” Wednesday. “We found people. Unfortunately, they are not alive.”
Vach said first-responders discovered new tunnels in the rubble Tuesday night, which allowed for the discovery of more bodies. Vach said search and rescue teams were working in the space between the collapsed balconies.
“These tunnels that we found right now were almost the first to be big enough to enable people to stay between them. Most of the collapse is very, very tight. The collapse was major,” Vach said.
What he is talking about here are not tunnels under the building that existed before the collapse but tunnels or more precisely “voids” between the pancaked floors, the spaces between the collapsed balconies.
