Inflation: Refrigerator prices up - TV prices down - Beef up. What do you see?
PRICES--Seen in a local July 4th sales circular from a large appliance store | June 28 2021 | Me

Posted on 06/28/2021 11:46:57 AM PDT by dennisw

Air-conditioned prices up from last summer All large appliances up. Washing machines, driers, dishwashers, refrigerators etc. Microwave ovens stable or up

Food prices? What do you see? Forget chicken wings, buy drumsticks to substitute. Drumstick prices are not up very much.

Beef up 50% from last year. My favorite cuts at least. Though grass fed hamburger at Aldis is down 50 cents per pound. Watermelon prices same as last year.

What inflation or deflation do you see in anything? Some that might get you angry,

Due to excessive heat, drought and low water supplies, I know that hay production in southern oregon and north Northern California has been hit hard. Cattle are being sold off now. Remaining hay will rise in price as the summer moves into fall. Beef prices will go up.

At my local BJs Wholesale the price of whole pork loin went from $1.79 a pound to $2.39. I make that 34%.

Livestock feed is skyrocketing, $2-3 per 50lb bag, I sell eggs and chicken and egg cartons up 3 cents per carton, lumber is out past the moon and heading to deep space, metal roofing and sheeting doubled in price..

That toaster was covered in a popular Youtube video:

Some pretty clever old-school tech going on in that thing.

Gasoline/diesel prices keep rising. That kicks up the prices of veggies/fruits.

Steak prices at Costco are soaring and quality is down. So we buy good hamburger, pork and Costco Deli Chicken. We also bought chicken thighs as they are cheaper this week.

Yesterday, we did our first Walmart pickup order in months. We bought good wine, canned goods and other non perishable items at better prices than our local small chain.

About a year ago, Amazon started butting in with their prices on hardware type stuff on our monitor. This week I purchased more water hoses and nozzles to be ready for the fire season. Walmart had a better deal on 2 50’ hoses versus Amazon and Home Depot. So instead a couple of 100’ hoses, I bought 4 50’ hoses from Walmart. Amazon had an excellent one time deal on good nozzles in 2 packs. I bought 2 two packs and saved a lot of money versus HD or Walmart.

So, we picked up the hoses on our Walmart grocery pickup and Amazon delivered the nozzles yesterday. Everything is now installed and tested. We hope we never have to use them.

We are retrofitting things that need to be replaced in/on our home. Our Outdoor lights were in bad shape. We went on line and this time HD had a better price on the lights, and my wife had $125 in HD gift certificates. So we ordered 6 lights from HD and 6 dusk to dawn bulbs from Amazon. They are up and working.

My wife and I are like purchasing agents trying to find the best deal at the best price. My wife basically is the grocery PA and I am the hardware guy.

We buy most of our produce from spring to fall from a local farm family. Our neighborhood chain store has excellent produce. So if our local family doesn’t have what we want, we often find it at the chain on our way home.

We check out the Monday or Thursday sale items at the chain. Often the brand items and their own canned items have excellent prices, so we load up. We also donate a bag of canned goods each month to a local charity. A friend and her husband pick up the filled bag once a month and leave an empty bag for the upcoming month.

“This past weekend I was looking to rig up a filter for the latest round of the Samsung washing machine battle.”

You may need to put the phosphates back into the detergent. The modern machines use less water, colder water, and detergent that is just dyes and perfume. If you do try TSP or other phosphate, you may have to use hotter water, and a lot of phosphate detergent. The synthetics accumulate body oils, then the oils go rancid and hard, meaning smelly and hard to remove.

Getting badly rancid oil soiled laundry clean may take a trip to the dry cleaner. Then start using TSP with your detergent.

Government ruins everything.

Whatever the price, avoid Chinese. Honda outboards are now being made in China.

Our oldest son bought a Honda Outboard 30 years ago to go on our little boat. My Chrysler outboard died after 5 years. I gave him the boat. He/we have used that Honda for decades with an occasional tuneup. His college age son, does the tuneups now.

The motor looks like crud on the outside, and it still works great even with incoming saltwater on high tides.

If you cultivate the sales a various stores you can keep your prices somewhat in line.

The only thing that seems unavoidable is the skyrocketing price of meat.

You Tube has saved us a lot of money this year.

Our DWer, washing machine and dryer stopped working.

On of our DILs re the DWer told me to go to You Tube and check out the restart button and use it.

That worked. Similar results with our washer dryer and even our routers.

Netgear advised me of a firmware update that I ran and turned my pricey router into a doorstop.

I wound up buying the the only one in my area that night. At least there was one on the shelf.

Forget the price increases as they are automatic and look for shortages. My New Balance walking shoes have worn out and I can’t find new ones in my size. Is this “Introduction To Socialism 101”?

E-retailers like Amazon and Walmart have third party retailers and there is a lot of price gouging with the third party retailers. Tools, small appliances, shoes. You are better off shopping locally.

Food is ok, no real changes from hamburger to buns and veggies you will be paying the same around here for most things with a few outliers that have ready substitutes. No idea about packaged foods (we don’t buy them much).

There are going to be whole classes of items that might go missing due to supply chain problems, one week there will be no trash bags to be found for example.

Air conditioners are up across the board, same with sneakers.

Now is a good time to buy American made tools, because they are only a few bucks more than the China made stuff, if you buy from authorized dealers.

Bikes are more reasonable than they were, but they are up in price. Everyone knows about cars already, they are up.

There are third party sellers all over the place jacking up their prices and trying to take advantage of the supply chain problems coupled with stimulus cash in people’s pockets.

Energy prices have been edging up. Its not a lot, but thats what I’m keeping an eye on.

You can get an old Singer sewing machine, U.S. or Japanese made are favorite, for very little at your local Salvation Army or Shopgoodwill.com

The school models from the 70’s, 80’s (Fashion Mate, etc) are very robust too, just make sure it powers on and works.

I see the situation is as usual: skirts are up and pants are down.

My S-I-L was quoted $8,000 for a new HVAC Unit a few years ago. Now it will cost $12,000.

Beef prices are way up. For some strange reason, canned cat food in very short supplies at all the chains where I live (Giant, Safeway and Wegmans)
