Those familiar with the Southern Ocean, the body of water encircling Antarctica, know it’s unlike any other.
“Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what's so mesmerizing about it, but they'll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more intimidating, and the landscapes more captivating than anywhere else you can go,” says Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a National Geographic Explorer.
Since National Geographic began making maps in 1915, it has recognized four oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans.
Starting on June 8, World Oceans Day, it will recognize the Southern Ocean as the world’s fifth ocean.
“The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it,” says National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait.

I learned there were these five oceans also, back.in my school days in the late 1960s.
So I’m surprised they are saying the Antarctic Ocean was never considered an ocean, and that it was not called the Antarctic Ocean.
Pluto was named after the Roman god of the underworld by Venetia Burney, who was eleven years old when she suggested the name, back in 1930.
It was a big mistake to say that. They should have said:
Instead of raising the oceans like we said, we discovered that all the melt went into a new ocean that we're calling the Southern Ocean.-PJ
I’m sorry but that is the most idiotic thing I have heard out of the ‘scientific’ community all day. They are just changing it’s name to Southern Ocean as if that makes any difference at all to anything what so ever.
And it is making headlines.
Well, they are globull warming alarmist and they have to accomplish something.
They are racists in disguise—the secret message “The Southern Ocean will rise”...
Guess a whole bunch of scientists are gonna have to be canceled.
;-)
(Yes, I'm hungry, why do you ask?)
Ok, I thought we always had 5. Arctic, Indian, Antarctic, Atlantic and Pacific.
By the way, National Geographic is the publisher of FauxChi's novel, err, book. They have been pimping climate change and total BS for 30+ years now. Zero credibility, but if you go into any elementary school you'll find their propaganda all over the place. And none of it has anything to do with geography.
if the :southern ocean: is somehow legit, given that it is NOT even partially separated from the Indian, Pacific, or Atlantic Oceans.....
certainly it is time to recognize Pluto again!
It’s all one BIG ocean. To divide it is raciss!
Did they name blinds after her?
I see what you did there. ;-)
There’s one ocean. We just have five different names for it.
And Fauci doesn't lie...he said.
So oceans are being devalued?
Ocean can you sea…
