There’s a new ocean now — can you name all 5?

Those familiar with the Southern Ocean, the body of water encircling Antarctica, know it’s unlike any other.

“Anyone who has been there will struggle to explain what's so mesmerizing about it, but they'll all agree that the glaciers are bluer, the air colder, the mountains more intimidating, and the landscapes more captivating than anywhere else you can go,” says Seth Sykora-Bodie, a marine scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and a National Geographic Explorer.

Since National Geographic began making maps in 1915, it has recognized four oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans.

Starting on June 8, World Oceans Day, it will recognize the Southern Ocean as the world’s fifth ocean.

“The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists, but because there was never agreement internationally, we never officially recognized it,” says National Geographic Society Geographer Alex Tait.

I learned there were these five oceans also, back.in my school days in the late 1960s.

So I’m surprised they are saying the Antarctic Ocean was never considered an ocean, and that it was not called the Antarctic Ocean.

The new ocean should be named "Billy"

Seriously? That is just Goofy

Pluto was named after the Roman god of the underworld by Venetia Burney, who was eleven years old when she suggested the name, back in 1930.

The Southern Ocean has long been recognized by scientists

It was a big mistake to say that. They should have said:

Instead of raising the oceans like we said, we discovered that all the melt went into a new ocean that we're calling the Southern Ocean.

I’m sorry but that is the most idiotic thing I have heard out of the ‘scientific’ community all day. They are just changing it’s name to Southern Ocean as if that makes any difference at all to anything what so ever.

And it is making headlines.

Well, they are globull warming alarmist and they have to accomplish something.

They are racists in disguise—the secret message “The Southern Ocean will rise”...

Guess a whole bunch of scientists are gonna have to be canceled.

It's Arctic Ocean because you have to cross the Arctic Circle and get a burger and shake before seeing it...

(Yes, I'm hungry, why do you ask?)

Ok, I thought we always had 5. Arctic, Indian, Antarctic, Atlantic and Pacific.

When I was a kid I think it was 7: Arctic, Antarctic, Indian, North Pacific, South Pacific, North Atlantic and South Atlantic.

Call it social equity. Isn't that the term these leftists use? They trade Pluto for an ocean. Really mess up old people who learned correctly and destroy their credibility with all of the little face-diaper wearing Marxists hiding behind plexiglass barriers.

By the way, National Geographic is the publisher of FauxChi's novel, err, book. They have been pimping climate change and total BS for 30+ years now. Zero credibility, but if you go into any elementary school you'll find their propaganda all over the place. And none of it has anything to do with geography.

if the :southern ocean: is somehow legit, given that it is NOT even partially separated from the Indian, Pacific, or Atlantic Oceans.....

certainly it is time to recognize Pluto again!

This seems a pretty silly idea. The other oceans can be clearly defined by narrow straights separating them. Southern Ocean boundary is a straight line around the earth.
