In the 50s and early 60s the nukes generally weren’t particularly large or accurate.
Duck and cover would protect you from a lot of glass and debris.

I’m not arguing with you as we both are well past the time period and know more, I was relaying what I thought as a kid based on what I knew then.

We did the “duck and cover” under our desks in the third grade in 1963 while in school in S. Florida.
