I hope it’s ok to post this vanity -
I am headed on vacation and I want something to read that is not political, PC, preachy or self-help. I just want to read something that is well-written, light and interesting. I already read the Bible daily so this is in addition to that.
I don’t mind romance added in, but I prefer historical fiction. I don’t like historical fiction that has been edited to the point of being unrealistic or or with a liberal agenda. I don’t mind action, mystery or drama, but not a fan of murder mysteries or anything gory.
For the past year, I have read nothing but political news and message boards, informative books, self-help and inspirational, but I am looking for just a good story I can loose myself in and unplug for a while at the beach.
Ideas?
I meant Anna Karenina.
“Harpo Speaks!”
His autobiography.
Hilarious, and very touching.
Of all the Marx Brothers, Harpo was the most lovable.
Anything written after the 'Bear and the Dragon' is down hill {in my opinion}.
James Alexander Thom - From Sea to Shining Sea - Not light but a really good historical novel.
Agatha Christie - mystery but not gory. Pick the short stories if this is your first dive in.
P. G. Wodehouse - not for everyone. You will have to be able to read 1920s British. If you can they are very funny. If not.... you will be wondering about me.
David Weber - The Apocalypse Troll if you want one book or The Dahak series if you want two or three. Sci-Fi with out the data dumps.
Phyllis McGinley - The Plain Princess (fiction) or Sixpence in Her Shoe (non-fiction)
Shōgun by James Clavell
Detective/mystery:
Anne Perry (Both Pitt and Monk Series)
Andrea Camilleri
Antonio Manzini
Erik Larson’s books are all good reads. I wouldn’t really call them fiction, though he does try to be writing more than a dry, purely factual account.
Frank Herbert, Dune
Margaret Mitchell, Gone With the Wind
Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings trilogy
Alison Weir, British historical fiction;
her series on Henry the 8th’six wives is quite good
Non-fiction, anything by Erik Larson.. The Devil in the White City, Dead Wake, both quite good
A Cry of Angels by Jeff Fields, the best novel I have read in decades. Picture what would happen if Tom Sawyer and To Kill a Mockingbird had a child.
For WWII historical fiction, PT Dueterman is a good author. I think his latest is entitled The Hooligans. It’s about a PT squadron. He gets deep in the weeds on tactics and armaments.
One of his books spent a couple chapters on the faults and failures of WWII torpedo navigation systems.
Another was on a sub command. Another was about Dauntless dive bomber units. Very interesting books on some of the lesser known parts of our WWII strategy
Simon the Fiddler
I’ll second David Weber. His Honor Harribgton series is great.
Also, Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody mysteries.
Dorothy Sayers Peter’s Wimsey books.
James Michener’s books.
Clive Cussler, his earlier stuff.
And Ellis Peters’ Cadfael series.
Start with the Corps series, the Marines from 1937 0r 38 until the Korean war........ very great reads. He knows his stuff and his characters are all great
Then there tons of others once you get hooked
I’ve read a few of his books. Never got hooked though. I think it’s because he’s one of those authors who pumps out so many different series I can’t keep track of them.
Yep......
Search for WEB Griffin the corps series in order and then read them in order
Ok, I’m going to beat my own drum. ‘The Witch of New Orleans’, Roger D Strahan, author, on Kindle Unlimited. Has good reviews and it isn’t potions and witchcraft.
Thanks for the quick correction ... I was beginning to look the other one up.
Currently reading Martha Grimes series featuring Richard Jury. These are light mysteries with plots that are interesting but not too complicated, and the writing is quite witty.
Moby Dick. Sometimes I read just a random chapter. Dragon’s Egg by Robert Forward very hard science sci-fi no wizards magic spells. Kinda historical fiction in the future.
