The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
If you have specific question about a plant/problem you are having, please remember to state the Growing Zone where you are located.
This thread is a non-political respite. No matter what, you won’t be flamed, and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table Recipes, Preserving, Good Living - there is no telling where it will go - and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us! Send a Private Message to Diana in Wisconsin if you'd like to be added to our New & Improved Ping List.
NOTE: This is a once a week Ping List. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest to Gardeners are welcomed any time!

The forecast is for the mid 80’s for a couple days and the about 80 for a couple more.
What effect will that have on my broccoli, cabbage, and brussel sprouts?
Well, it’s still early in the season, so while they won’t LIKE it, they probably won’t bolt on you.
Keep them well-watered with the heat, though. That will help. I have broccoli & cauliflower in, as well as peas, and that’s my plan.
We are having a final Spring day today, then it goes to rainy, hot (80’s) & humid.
Typical. But, this Spring has really been lovely, compared to the past few we’ve had when it’s been nothing but WET.
Generally cool and damp here in Central Missouri over the past week. We made it home safely from our trout fishing trip. I was extremely pleased with the performance of the 6.4L Hemi in the new RAM truck. I always felt nervous pulling the camper with the old G2 truck because it was so tired. It was nice to get away and relax for a few days, but it’s even nicer to be home.
The rain slacked up just enough yesterday that I was able to get some stuff done in the victory garden. Set up the cucumber fence and stuck some seeds in the dirt. Sowed three hills of summer squash. Did some weeding.
Tomato and pepper plants are doing well. The cool weather has made for a bumper crop of radishes and green salad. Carrots, beets, and spinach are all sprouted. Still waiting on the pole beans, winter squash, and canteloupe to show themselves.
Mrs. Augie has been wanting to make a flower bed on the outside of my potting shed, so I hauled up some crushed limestone and landscaping blocks for that. Laid a course of blocks on a nice gravel bed and then back-filled with compost. I’ll need to add more as it settles, but for now it’s planted with elephant ear and canna. It ought to look really nice once the bulbs sprout and start growing.
I’m putting in my peppers and tomatoes today and planting lots of herb seeds.
I will keep them wet. They are nicely mulched thoguh.
So far I have Zukes & Cukes in and three cherry-type tomatoes in big nursery pots.
Next up is more Kale, Chard & lettuces.
I’m making good progress! I just came in for some coffee and to wash my hands...
I’m in to refuel and take a break then it’s out again.
Will also bring up the rest of my tomato cages from the milk house. Every time I go down to the barn to rotate dogs in the exercise yard, or pet my steer, I’ve been bringing a few back up.
24 plants (plus the three cherry-types) is the ‘Magic Number’ this season.
Yeah, I’m nuts, but I’m out of Salsa! That is a serious problem around here! ;)
Beautiful tree!!!

Dad had a big old diesel RAM truck with a camper shell to haul his 30' sailboat around. He pretty much camped and lived at the nearest lakes in the summer months after he retired. Her name was 'Tug Boat' - he had that on her license plates. I miss that truck, but I miss my Dad more. :(
His boat was named, 'Ms. B. Haven,' LOL!
My Pops is about to hit 79yo, and is in very good health for an old-timer. I’m hoping to have him around to tell me how I’m doing it wrong for a long time. He got rid of his old Cummins dually not long after I bought the new Hemi RAM. Guess he figured if there was something heavy that needed to be moved I can do it for him. lol
Every boat needs a name. Mine is called PBR Judy Badoomba. Named after my favorite teacher from when I was in high school. She was an awesome lady who had a well-developed “anchor”. My boat is a bit broad at the beam as well, so that just seemed to me like the perfect name.
Woohoo! Finally planting our tomatoes!
Well, guess I won’t be connecting the new irrigation pump to the garden water tank any time soon: A turkey decided to nest too close to it, and we don’t want to unduly upset her.
Just have to keep it wet the hard way, hauling jugs down there, and doing it by hand, for a while.
I’m waiting one more week, then the rest of the tomatoes and peppers go in!
I got the following planted, today:
Cherry-type tomatoes
Zucchini
Cucumber
Basil
Swiss Chard
Nasturtium
Dahlia
fresh Kale (mine over wintered but wants to go to flower)
Stargazer Lilies
And I potted up a bunch of started plants that needed bigger pots. I need new string on my bean pole tower, then I can get those in this week, too, as well as bush beans. I picked out which beds will be peppers (2) and which will be tomatoes for this season. I try to move stuff around when I can.
I have two brand new beds, but I’m going to fill them with annual cutting flowers for now, then one is going to have garlic this fall and the other spring bulbs (Daffs, Tulips, etc.) for cutting - just for me! :)
It was a productive day! Looking forward to the rain that is coming my way!

I got all my veggies in, all the peppers and tomatoes, the herbs I started, and a bunch of seeds for flowers like cosmos, nasturtiums, and marigolds.
Hopefully, it’ll do well in keeping the pests down.

Look up Dukes Garden Japanese Plum Yew. If this shrub grows in your zone, you might enjoy it. I love using it.
