Australian pubs once had a reputation the world over as tough, brawling, hell for leather places where you could get into a fight at the drop of a hat.

A friend of mine worked in Australia back in the 80s, and he said that a sure way to piss off Aussies was to tell them that even though they spoke English, they were still a third-world country.

Hell for leather is not and never was a thing. The idiom was hell bent for leather and it described being in a hurry not in a bar.
