Eight Foot Python Snake Found Slithering About in Welsh Countryside

It is not known if the snake had escaped or was abandoned

A member of the public found an eight foot python slithering around in the Welsh countryside.

The serpent, later identified as a reticulated python, was found on a farm near woodlands in Troedyrhiw, Merthyr Tydfil. The RSPCA is now appealing for information after it was handed into the charity's Merthyr clinic. It is not known if the python had escaped or was abandoned.

It has now been transferred to a specialist keeper after the discovery where it will be kept if the owner isn’t found.

As snakes are not able to produce their own body heat they are not able to feed or move normally and their immune system will not work if they become too cold.

RSPCA inspector Dave Milborrow said: “Finding a snake this big out in the open must be a bit of a shock! This isn’t the biggest a python can get, females can grow up to 28ft long so this python is a little one compared to how long they can grow.

“While they’re not venomous, they can still bite and constrict. These snakes require expert knowledge to keep them safely. We don’t know if this snake escaped or was abandoned, so we’re keen to find out more - and also get them home if they have escaped.”

The RSPCA added that snakes would often take the opportunity of a gap in an enclosure door, or a loose-fitting lid to escape, and urged owners to invest in an enclosure suitable and to microchip pets including snakes.

Anyone with information should contact the RSPCA’s appeals line on 0300 123 8018.

Probably a species of python that evolved to eat Welsh rabbits.

I have already witnessed a 3’ cottonmouth and a chicken snake in NE Texas. I did not wipe them out. The diamond back and timbers have me nervous. I dislike rattlebugs.

Melted cheese doesn’t seem like something a constrictor would enjoy.

"These snakes require expert knowledge to keep them safely."

I find it funny that the ignorant try to make claims that are without basis. A one hour youtube video would teach you enough to take care of that snake.

I had a ball python and it was incredibly easy to take care of. Keeping it in its cage was a problem, because visitors were always playing with it and would not securely close its cage. I quickly learned that when it got loose, just wait. It would always reappear within a few days.

The python was just ‘looking for a better life’ which by international, indeed intergalactic law and most importantly Karen moral law, is his absolute right !

This is not so unusual. Maybe in Wales, but not in general. The rat snakes I catch at the river are over 6 feet. A long snake doesn’t have anything to do with fear or danger, it’s just fodder for a slow news day or “human interest” story.

Burmese Pythons are good swimmers. They’re throughout the Everglades and the Florida Keys.
