One in three people who overcome COVID-19 suffer from a neurological or psychiatric diagnosis six months on, according to the largest study so far published on the mental toll that long-COVID takes on survivors.
Authors said the research, printed Wednesday in The Lancet Psychiatry journal, proved that COVID-19 patients were significantly more likely to develop brain conditions than those suffering from other respiratory tract infections.
Studying the health records of more than 230,000 patients who had recovered from COVID-19, they found that 34 percent were diagnosed with a neurological or psychiatric condition within six months.
The most common conditions were anxiety (17 percent of patients) and mood disorders (14 percent).
For 13 percent of patients the disorders were their first diagnosis of a mental health issue.
Incidence of neurological disorders such as brain hemorrhage (0.6 percent), stroke (2.1 percent) and dementia (0.7 percent) was lower overall than for psychiatric disorders but the risk for brain disorders was generally higher in patients who had severe COVID-19.
The authors also examined data from more than 100,000 patients diagnosed with influenza and more than 236,000 diagnosed with any respiratory tract infection.
They found there was overall a 44 percent greater risk of neurological and mental health diagnoses after COVID-19 than after flu, and a 16 percent higher risk than with respiratory tract infections.
Paul Harrison, lead author from the University of Oxford, said that while the individual risk of neurological and psychiatric orders from COVID-19 was small, the overall effect across the global population could prove to be "substantial".
"Many of these conditions are chronic," he said.
"As a result, health care systems need to be resourced to deal with the anticipated need, both within primary and secondary care services."
'Severe impact' Patients hospitalized with severe COVID-19 were at great risk of developing long-term conditions, according to the analysis.
For example, 46 percent of patients who needed intensive care were diagnosed with neurological or psychiatric conditions within six months of recovery.
The data showed 2.7 percent of people needing intensive care suffered a subsequent brain hemorrhage, compared to 0.3 percent of people who weren't hospitalized.
And nearly 7 percent of those needing ICU care suffered a stroke, compared with 1.3 percent of patients who didn't.
Writing in a linked comment article, Jonathan Rogers from University College London, said further research was needed on the long-term neurological and psychiatric outcomes among COVID-19 patients.
"Sadly, many of the disorders identified in this study tend to be chronic or recurrent, so we can anticipate that the impact of COVID-19 could be with us for many years," said Rogers, who was not involved in the study.
"It is clear from this study that the impact COVID-19 is having on individuals mental health can be severe," said Lea Milligan, CEO of the MQ Mental Health research group.
"This is contributing to the already rising levels of mental illness and requires further, urgent research."
The adage, “Correlation doesn’t equate to causation” should certainly apply here. What about the effects of people having reduced interaction with other people? Did they consider that might have an effect on the mental state of the 1 in 3?
Regards,
These vile people started out with warnings -- based on false data and failed models -- that if you catch the virus you're as good as dead! Then we where warned that if you don't wear a dehumanizing, face-covering, identity-hiding talisman to protect you from the horrors of the Chinese evil spirit, Covid, you'll not only kill yourself you'll be performing human sacrifice on everyone else. More recently we were warned that if you don't get one of the experimental vaccines which really aren't "vaccines" in the medical sense of the word you'll never, ever (maybe) live a normal life again.
And the elevated level of increasingly irrational fear continues to be maintained with tales of even deadlier, although not unexpected, variations of the Chinese evil spirit and with the published results of questionable -- at best -- "studies" such as this one.
With all of the lies from all of the "leaders" and all of the "experts" nearly all of the time it's a challenge to believe anything anymore. Our society and so many of our medical professionals have the credibility of most Internet blogs!

You remember how worried you were, the last time you got the flu, that it would turn into a neurological disorder or a mental health issue? Well with COVID you should be 44% or 16% more worried, respectively.
Scaring people with a 2nd Spanish Flu (that kills .2%), Locking people down in their homes, destroying their jobs and businesses, masking them at 6 feet distances most likely has nothing to do with their health. That darn virus that is mostly asymptotic is definitely to blame.
I young woman who teaches at the school I sub at got the Wuhan at the end of the year. It made her feel really bad, but she recovered without hospitalization. And she regained her sense of smell. But she said that things with strong odors, she mentioned gasoline and toothpaste now smell different. Of course trying to describe a smell is difficult at best, but she said they now have a ‘medicinal’ smell to them.
Now, of course, this is no big deal, but she seems to think the the virus kind of ‘rewired’ a part of her brain/nervous system and she specifically mentioned the idea of long-term neurological effects.
This is why we are getting vaccinated. No way we can accept odds like that. The vaccines are working.
“The most common conditions were anxiety (17 percent of patients) and mood disorders (14 percent).”
Why would this be a monumental revelation. Considering the financial, physical, and emotional toll not just of COVID but of policies enacted by government, private business, and health providers because of COVID this should be expected. Especially for those elderly in care homes who were kept apart from human contact from those they needed most.
Thank you. Yes, “brain fog” is a great description.
My brother-in-law, turned 69 in March, had a very severe case, in the hospital and then rehab for a total of 2 months from the end of November until mid-January. He was out of his mind in the beginning, had no idea where he was when he was in the hospital. He was very belligerent, kept ripping his IV’s out, unresponsive to doctors/nurses, wasn’t eating. He nearly died. Recently he told my sister he feels like he lost half of himself. His oxygen level was very low when he went to the ER initially and his blood sugar was 500+, insulin dependent diabetic.
I believe for those that had it so severe, there are lasting effects.

THE VOICES IN MY HEAD TELL ME I’M FINE...................
Nobody will ever be able to convince me that this wasn't a deliberate act by the Chi-Coms to destroy the economies of the world, and specifically targeted America, the most powerful country on the planet. Their main target was this country and President Trump. And they succeeded completely. Why the world isn't demanding that China be held responsible for all of this is beyond me. Evil is winning, and I'm glad I'm on the tail end of my life.

Talk about fear-mongering!
The time to do that "further, urgent research" is in the clinical trial stage, BEFORE undertaking mass vaccinations!
The fear that articles like this instills in vulnerable, passive, (non-skeptical) people is real. Those who write and publish the articles know that very well.
Those psychologically vulnerable people will then be motivated to go get vaccinated. This is not saying that all who get vaxxed are psychologically vulnerable! Just a percentage of people - a small one, will react with an element of fear and go get jabbed.
I hope he is doing better now and continues to improve.
I work now for a company that makes equipment for ECMO which is Extracorporeal oxygenation for patients whose lungs and/or heart aren’t working well and need tome to heal. Covid pts have been heavy users of these devices. I have seen pts clot off their ECMO circuits in a day or two due to the great hypercoagulability that occurs. In some pts it is dramatic.
That’s why I am not too surprised if that studies findings. I hope and pray your family member continues to improve.
During Obama's time in office, the word was "unexpected".
My theory is as follows: China needs to be rid of about three quarters of a billion people. COVID-19 seemed a good bio-candidate for the task, as it tends to kill the elderly and medically compromised (in communist terms, the useless eaters) while the younger and more healthy (the workers) recover. It escaped from the lab before the planned release and infected many in Wuhan. The CCP leadership saw the opportunity to test it on a large scale, so while stopping travel from Wuhan to other parts of China they encouraged it to other nations, the U.S. in particular.
With the aid of many blue state petty dictators and whining Karens, it succeeded beyond their wildest expectations.
One must wonder what role the constant lock-downs played in these mental health conditions. Probably 99% of it.
