They’d been carefully excavating the petrified remains of a forest, and it isn’t about using a bulldozer. Crack a book.

I have a big chunk of Arizona petrified wood in my yard that someone gifted to me. It weighs about twice as much as you’d expect a rock of similar size to weigh. As such, I don’t move it around much.

Interestingly enough, prior to Sappho (figures she’d ruin everything), the women of Lesbos were renowned fellatrixes, uh, fellatrices, whatever, to the point that “woman of Lesbos” was code for that kind of service anywhere it was available in the Greek world.

So, when was the spelling of the island’s name changed?

It’s all part of the rich pageant of slow change to languages everywhere. Not sure if it got the V sound in more recent Greek, or the transliteration from Greek to, say, English, transformed it to the B sound.

I was trying to find a clip of the Cheers show’s “Cliff” character rant about the isle of Lesbos, but apparently it got scrubbed from the web.

That pic reminds me of the petrified tree(s) in Yellowstone...some 50 million years old.

Of course I wouldn’t expect them to use a bulldozer for this.
I’d expect them to use a backhoe.
They probably could have found this tree in a couple of hours with a backhoe.
Are all the workers getting paid by the hour or something?

Ancient Greek beta had a "b" sound (shown by Roman transliterations of Greek words). At some point it shifted to a "v" sound, so in modern Greece they tend to transliterate names as they are pronounced. Ancient historians use the spelling Lesbos when dealing with ancient times.

Sounds (and smells) like BS to me!
