A pandemic experiment in criminal justice reform takes hold in one of America's most violent cities.
A year ago, as the coronavirus began to spread across Maryland, Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby stopped prosecuting drug possession, prostitution, minor traffic violations and other low-level offenses, a move aimed at curbing Covid-19's spread behind bars.
That shift — repeated by prosecutors in many other cities — didn’t just reduce jail populations. In Baltimore, nearly all categories of crime have since declined, confirming to Mosby what she and criminal justice experts have argued for years: Crackdowns on quality-of-life crimes are not necessary for stopping more serious crime.
On Friday, Mosby announced that she was making her pandemic experiment permanent, saying Baltimore — for decades notorious for runaway violence and rough policing — had become a case study in criminal justice reform.
In the 12 months since she ordered scaled-back enforcement, violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent, she said. Homicides inched down, though Baltimore still has one of the highest homicide rates among cities nationwide. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University found sharp reductions in calls to police complaining about drugs and prostitution, she said.MORE AT LINK
How stupid...The crime hasn't declined...The penalties have declined...Why not eliminate those laws that are responsible for the arrests???
Lets see how those property values do, or development projects, or new jobs produced in Baltimore when there are hookers and dealers working in broad daylight.
I’d have guessed that was Detroit or the south side of Shitcago by the looks of it... (and I’ve seen the south side of Shitcago.)
According to the article, it was other crimes, "violent crime is down 20 percent and property crime has declined 36 percent" that were reduced. Whether they're telling the truth or not is another matter, but they weren't talking about reductions in drug arrests.
I’m thinking it’s the third option.
Get out and go where? The criminal democrat party, supported by the useful idiot democrat voters, is working to make this a reality for the entire country.
Don’t allow the Democrats and the Democrat Controlled Media to gaslight you.
“””In Baltimore, nearly all categories of crime have since declined”””
When the police do not file a crime report the number of crimes do go down.
That’s a bingo! What we are experiencing is modern day warfare where government itself turns against the people and wages war against them. All the while, the useful idiots who keep telling themselves they are helping, continue to vote for the totalitarian government.
I wouldn’t trust them to tell the truth if I asked how they were doing, but let’s not get caught in the trap of answering points they’re not making.
If everyone is locked down, maybe thay is why many crimes are fown. That is assuming they are telling the truth. Given that most crime is committed by Democrats, they would have no reason to lie...
This should make Baltimore a place not to go to.
Just this week, Michigan will begin letting a defendant refuse probation. Shoplifting will be issued a ticket to appear. A fail to appear requires that the court not issue a warrant for 48 hours. If a person voluntarily appears to answer an outstanding warrant, the Judge has two hours to arraign him, or it’s a personal recognizance bond. There is more.
This is similar to the mantra noted by Stalin and others that it does not matter who votes. It matters who counts the votes.
It is amazing how much crime levels drop when the government no longer tallies the crimes that occur.
My granddaughter lives in Baltimore.
I’m going to talk her into coming and living with me.
Stop arresting will reduce crime rate....Duh..
Just send in Brother Mouzone. He can clean things up.
As Prop Joe said “that N has more bodies on him than a Chinese cemetery”
