This observatory has been delayed by years, if ya wanna talk about piracy.

“Uh, don’t we still have a navy?”

They are all having a sulk over some slight and will not talk to each other?

The Female Navy involved are having a spat over mirror time, and are not speaking.

Where exactly is the threat? In Panama?

There are options - as others have already posted, some Marines onboard to protect it, perhaps a destroyer escort if you're still worried. If the Panamanians object to armed troops (which they might), then avoid the canal and sail it around South America.

Now you have to ask - how secure will the mirror be in Ghana?

Easy Peasy.... Just escort the shipment with a US Coast Guard cutter or a USN frigate (better armed) if NASA is that worried about piracy.

Now that I've solved that problem, I'll wrap it up for today. Aww what the heck. I'll give NASA some more freebies...

Don't ship on that route during hurricane season. The body of water between Trinidad and the South American coasts of Columbia and Venezuela are especially well known for rough, chaotic seas in the best of times and no reason to go all risky and catch a hurricane as well.

For that matter, off the coast of Venezuela, piracy has spiked up in recent years. Might need an aircraft carrier.

Don't ship on a Maersk ship. They've been loosing LOTs of containers overboard lately

Because this is a decoy route and they are really transporting it by some other secret route?

Let me guess they fear patriots and Trump supporters

And just why can’t it be launched in America?

Isn’t NASA a US Government entity? They have their own cops.

Put the damn thing on a US Navy or Coast Guard ship and let the pirates do their thing. I’d like to man one of the .50s on the side of the ship or perhaps a mini-gun mounted in a Seahawk. I think it’d be fun.

This scope is to be pointed at earth to look for systemic racism. So it’s like super important that white supremecist pirates from Panama don’t get ahold of it.

C5 is not big enough nor would the Antonov An-225 Mriya - the tennis court refereed to for the JWT cage would be around 38 feet in diameter

Its not the length or weight, its the diameter

al baby: "you seem to not know much about orbital insertion"

Ha! Are you kidding me?
I was a history major, never studied rocket science, closest I came was astronomy and didn't do so well there -- too much math, not enough star-gazing! ;-)

But I well remember when the US launched men to the moon on Saturn rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
So, the Cape was good enough then, but not today?
Today we have to risk "pirates" stealing our stuff to launch from French Guiana?

So, Mr. Scientist, let me ask the question this way: exactly how many gallons of rocket fuel do we save launching from French Guiana instead of Cape Canaveral?
And what is the price per gallon of rocket fuel these days?

So, let me guess the answers: it'll save 50,000 gallons of rocket fuel launching from French Guiana and rocket fuel costs $10 per gallon = a $500,000 savings and for that we're going to risk our $10 billion state-or-the-art telescope getting robbed by "pirates"?

You're kidding me, right?

The James Webb telescope is a joint project between NASA and the ESA (European Space Agency).

The ESA’s contribution is paying for the rocket. That’s why it is being launched from French Guyana.

Thanks for the information which should have been in the article. Any idea why the US Navy isn’t escorting the ship to the launch location if piracy is truly a risk?
