Ross Perot chose a non-politician as his VP when he ran for President. The story of Admiral Stockdale was not so well known to people at that time, and when Stockdale made his first big TV appearance, he opened with thoughts that were intended to echo those of many viewers: "Who am I? What am I doing here?"
The media enjoyed making for of him for choosing to introduce himself with that opener.
Joe Biden? Perfectly normal guy. Nothing to see here. Best guy ever to occupy the ... you know ... the thing. And the media has no questions at all because everything is hunky dory.
