That was left unclear on purpose in the series; there are a lot of really ugly bombings in the past century that are still unsolved today. There are ambiguous hints that the first three stations may have been destroyed by human interests, though.

-shrug- To be fair, it was no worse to be in the hotels of Victoria, Texas during the early frontier days. You had an excellent chance of being killed by angry natives.
Frontier hostelry is never safe. People go anyway.
