Amazon has adopted a rule against books that contain anything the company labels as “hate speech.” It appears there was no announcement of the new rule. It was only noticed by media after the online retailer recently banned a book that criticizes transgender ideology.
It’s not clear what Amazon means by “hate speech” or even if it used that label to drop that particular book. In general parlance, Americans hold widely diverging views on what constitutes hate speech, a 2017 Cato poll found. Some tech platforms describe it as speech that disparages people based on characteristics such as race, gender, and sexual proclivities. But insider evidence indicates the companies aren’t clear on where to draw the lines, perpetually redraw them, and at least in some instances ignore violations when politically convenient.

I have heard from third party book sellers that if Amazon bans it, you get a nasty email saying remove it or else. What is that else? If you don’t remove the book from your online inventory within two or three days, they keep ALL money in your account when they close it.

More and more I’m seeking out products outside of Amazon and it’s paying off. We need a lot of egg cartons because our chickens are producing about 14 eggs a day. Cartons on Amazon range from $.50 to over a dollar a carton, even in bulk. But I went to another site and got them for $.17 each. I got parts for my Bad Boy zero turn the same way. Once you get comfortable going to the internet, rather than just Amazon, you can actually save a ton of money* - and get more selection.
*even when you add in shipping.

Why isn’t Elizabeth Warren all over this? She had sooo much to say about Amazon in 2020 but in2021 she is syddenly silent on the subject. What changed?
So I know this includes all of the “tell all books” full of “hate speech” written by the Trump haters over the past four years. I hear there are still 17 more of them still to come. One written by a hot dog stand vendor and another written by a golf ball wash boy.
And yet, they still carry James Baldwin’s screeds.

What changed?
Competing against Amazon.com would take a HUGE investment.
Competing against them in specific areas, such as selling books where it’s both cheap to send them via USPS and people can live without immediate delivery can be done for a far smaller investment (basically some boxes in a living room).
Maybe it’s time for people on our side to consider going beyond the ‘whining’ stage and start actually fighting back?

We have switched over to Walmart. Also, we are buying books that we think might be soon banned.
In 1992, I was in college in Cleveland when the KKK obtained a permit to assemble on public square. Students were outraged! A political science mayor told us to shut up. Haters had the right to free speech as long as they didn’t act upon it. A black major, Michael White, told Clevelanders the same thing. And also told us to ignore them and not to be confrontational. The KKK was there for about 30 minutes and had an audience of zero. But those were the days when people still believed in the Constitution.

So they decide the definition of hate speech. How wonderful.
