Due to space, my garden is limited to pots and hanging baskets in this big window.
Yes, the Ghost Pepper plant is growing in a Home Depot bucket.
I got lavender started.
I planted rosemary seeds and am waiting, not very patiently, to see some green.
My black-eyed Susan’s and daisies are coming up. The painted daisies and coneflower, not so much.
I started some onion seeds and am waiting on them as well.
It’s supposed to rain today!!!!!!!!!!!
However, since the temp is not above freezing yet, I expect some icing.
It’s March, after all, and while it’s decidedly warming up,March is notorious for some of the worst storms.
BTW, the maple sap is flowing and syrup production is already going on here in NH, and these next two weeks look to be PERFECT sap run weather. Should be a really good season for maple syrup.
and a very good morning to you and yours, Diana. WOOOHOOO! 21 days until spring has sprung.
Spring starts Monday here in CT. 3/1
We skipped winter
.... Autumn ends tomorrow.
The great Melt has begun in Chicago
Good morning! I am going to seed snapdragons, pansies, pentas, and petunias this weekend. Using my BioDome from Park Seed for now, in a very sunny room we have. The new greenhouse should be operational by April first for the rest of my seed starting. Need to put the Lexan on the new greenhouse, and hang the door too.
Just planted four “windowsill” herbs - parsley, thyme, cilantro, and basil.
I will start lavender in the garage hothouse next week.
I’m going to try to grow a giant pumpkin this year so I’ll start those seeds pretty soon.
I need to go outside this week and get some winter cleanup done before the snakes wake up...
Enjoy your gardens while you can. Age related health issues prevent me from walking the 150 feet to the main veggie garden for now. We did get 48 feet of Garlic and 12 feet of Shallots planted last fall but we had to hire someone to weed it and do some other pruning around the yard a couple of weeks ago. I will see if Lady Bender can take a couple of photos that I can post here. Beautiful sunshine but windy and cold on the shores of Humboldt Bay in north western Calif.
We both got our Covid vaccine shots with the final last Saturday. We are both in our 80s...
Central Missouri has gone from freezer to mudhole in the span of a week. The frost is coming out of the ground and the roads are a horrible mess. Rain last night made bad conditions worse, but on the bright side my pond is almost back to full pool.
I took advantage of the sunshine yesterday and repaired the freeze-cracked ball valve on one of the outdoor taps. If I’d waited until today to work on that it would have had to wait until next weekend due to the mud, so I’m glad I didn’t put that off.
It’s about time to finish cleaning up the garden. Won’t be long til it’s time to plant spring greens.
Took RMv.2 back to the dealership on Friday to have the step bars, gooseneck hitch, and bedliner installed. It’s much easier for old fat man to get in and out now.
Thanks! I’ve only posted a few times - we tend to concentrate more on our livestock here than we do on gardening.
I’m in Maryland - I believe it’s Zone 7. I get conflicting information on when the snakes appear but I think I may have a couple weeks of safety yet.
Then things went down hill. The leaves started wilting and turning yellow. I had been diligent about testing the soil for moisture. What am I doing wrong?
Then it hit me, healthy plant above, healthy plant below. So to get at the root of the problem, I thought about the my raised bed of about 10 inches and determined the roots were getting into the soil below and that was the problem.
Tilling a raised bed is a delicate procedure. You want to try to keep the soil inside.Trying to till the ground under an existing raised bed is going to be a mess.
(As an aside if you decide to do a raised garden till and prep the ground beneath before adding the soil above.)
My solution is hugelkultur. You take rotten wood, grass clippings, compost, straw and soil and build mounds. The roots of my plants will be raised above that soiled soil below.
Just checking in.
Bought some extravagant Zinnia seeds today at the grocery ... that’s all I’m doing so far LOL!
I’m heading out to see what the greenhouses have for sale. I think all the rain and grey skies killed off my seedlings. Bummer.
