Strangers took in a delivery driver for 5 days after she was stranded in Texas storm

Since Sunday, Texas weathered a fierce storm that left cities without power, water and warmth for millions of people who aren’t used to this kind of cold.

Amid the tales of people struggling to survive, a few stories of hope showed that Texas hospitality is the real deal.

Timmons, who lives three hours away in Houston, said she makes weekly trips to Austin because the delivery market is better there. The 32-year-old picked up one last delivery on Sunday as the snow picked up, thinking she would have time to make it home.

She struggled to drive into the hilly neighborhood at midday to deliver the groceries, which were already a day late and included steaks for the couple’s planned Valentine’s Day dinner.

Northerners can not drive in the snow either. Come the first major snow there are accidents everywhere. About the third snow they finally remember how to drive in the snow.

Texas usually does not have the third snow. And no salt.

"Is there no sand in Texas?"

No, there's not. There are no snow plows or salt trucks, either. Practically the whole state is limestone, except for the crescent in the south made from silt brought down by rivers. The only sand has to come from the Gulf.

Storms like this last one only come about once a century. Snow removal equipment doesn't last that long.

(I'm only mildly exaggerating.)

"there really isn’t a secret to driving in [snow]...just drive slow and tap your breaks if you spin out."

That skill comes from experience. Texans have no experience driving in snow.

We got ice on the roads this time, not snow...for the most part.
Snow most of the time, but always ice.
Still, it's not that hard to drive on if you know some tricks.
Almost 60 and I can count the number of times it has snowed in my life on 2 hands. (Houston and eastward to La. is home)

Why do Northerners melt when temps get above 80 degrees and resort to opening fire hydrants for relief?

In Texas 80 degrees is a walk in the park bc we typically have 100+ temps with 100% humidity for weeks on end and we don’t open fire hydrants to cool off.

Weather extremes work both ways and reactions depend on what you are used to.

“I don’t mean this to be rude but why does it seem that Texans can’t drive in the snow? “

Well because they don’t grow up with it and have to do it every year.
It’s not a normal part of their experience .
Here in Iowa and everywhere else that gets snow; it takes the first snow every year to relearn winter driving technique .
People in Texas have in some cases never driven in snow.
Give them a break

It’s not snow. It’s ice. Sheets of it. If only it was snow, it would be easier.

Remember that hundred car pile up in Fort Worth two weeks ago? Seven people killed? It was ice. All ice.

I deploy three lidded sand buckets with scoops at the compound every Winter.

One at the House, one at the Garage and one toward the top of the hill along the driveway.

They come in handy on occasion.

A garden hose has to be hooked up to the drain outlet. Too much work for some people.

I keep a short one of those in a bucket next to the heater.

“get a lot of snow up here in Boston”

I got a good laugh at the TV a day or so ago. The weather channel had a guy reporting from Boston and the caption on the screen read, “Boston braces for 2” of snow”.
