Why Is Texas Experiencing Power Outages?
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2/15/21 | Russell Gold

Plunging temperatures in Texas caused several power plants to go offline in rapid succession Sunday, shortly before midnight. This triggered an emergency on the Texas power grid and led about two million homes to lose electricity.

The unusual cold is expected to stick around until at least Tuesday. This means it could take a while to get the grid back to normal operations.

......

Industry officials were scrambling to restore power at dozens of natural gas and coal plants, which tripped offline on Sunday evening and Monday morning. They asked residents to conserve electricity.

Thanks, the article says rolling black outs, that is BS. It was a straight up black out. Galveston county was blacked out for two damn cold days.

A friend in Alaska used to light a small fire in a hub cap and slide it under the oil pan.

I do know that gas volumes from producing wells has plummeted. We had to shut-in all of our high-volume wells. The reason is that they make a large amount of salt water and once the tanks at the well fill up, if no truck can make it out to take the water to a disposal well, then the well has to be shut-in. The trucks should start up again today and some wells will be brought on-line. No natural gas, no electricity. Also, I hear that the inlet water lines from the cooling ponds are freezing.

That was my guess too but the article says that it was so cold that the water froze at the intake of many of the NG and coal fired plants. I think plant engineers can come up with a solution to that. I also think we need a new modern nuke plant.

Cuz it got done to -6 where I live. The previous all-time record was -5 in 1899. This is the new ice age. We are all Minnesotans now.

They have a nominal capacity of ~25 GW in wind farms, about half of which is out of service due to icing per this article in the Austin American Statesman:

https://www.statesman.com/story/news/2021/02/14/historic-winter-storm-freezes-texas-wind-turbines-hampering-electric-generation/4483230001/

Current based on ERCOT real time data, they’re getting about 4.2 GW of output from that investment. 4.2 / 25 = 17%.

That seems pretty lousy in my book, but I’m certainly not a wind power expert.

We use “Diesel 911” up here in Northern Idaho. Cost is about 10$ to treat 100 gallons. also you can buy fuel filter heater wraps too.

Freezing rain takes out overhead power lines

Brother, that is so true. After the Oct. 26-27 ice storm hit Oklahoma, we had no power for DAYS on end due to power lines being taken down by trees with 1/2" to 1" of ice coating them. Transformers galore too.

So yesterday we read about frozen turbines and today wsj makes no mention of them being frozen. Only talks about nat gas and coal plants being down.

Nuke plants require water for the condensers just like coal and natural gas plants.

When a power plant is at peak output, the answer for excessive demand is rolling blackouts ( opening the breakers on certain distribution lines) instead of tripping it off line. Im suspicious about why the coal fired plants went down.

Lots of gas wells are shut-in. Many of the compressors that allow the gas to flow through the pipelines are down. The boys will get out in the field today and get them back up and running. As far as the wells, they need salt water haulers to empty the tanks at the wells so they can be brought back on-line.
