I got asthma after getting heavily poisoned with a pesticide (from a neighbor’s over use in the middle of the night while my windows were open) in my 40s- long boring story - but within a year and a half developed several auto-immune disorders. The asthma is quite under control as long as I avoid various chemicals. I could wear live cats and dogs and I’d be fine.
