I learned about that after finding a turn of the century Edison Battery Oil bottle while detecting a job site. My interest piqued, I started noodling about to see what it was for and stumbled across the NiFe manufacturer selling them.
The primary maintenance issue for them in remote areas (like RR lights/switches) is the evaporation of the water from the alkaline electrolyte and when servicing one you added water and then poured a bottle of battery oil on top and voila! Evaporation inhibited! 🤠

And nearly every rebuild is going to be performed by small and medium businesses. I’m on a 684 unit residential project currently and there are about a dozen total small to medium businesses as subs doing all the main work. Concrete, underground, masonry, framing, etc...
